Church silent as pastor hit with buggery charge says Star

In a follow up to a previous post on sister blog GLBTQ Jamaica a pastor was accused of buggery of a fifteen year old boy the 'church' has been accused of silence in a hypocritical sense. In the previous report I posted:

A 27 year old pastor of the New Testament Church of God in Bonkers Hill Trelawny has been relieved of duties after he was charged with sexual assault & buggery of a minor being a fifteen year old boy. Percy Smith has been slapped with buggery, gross indecency and grievous bodily harm, the acts allegedly occurred between 2016 to earlier this year. In a press release yesterday the Administrative Bishop of the church Reverend Wellesley Blair confirmed that Smith was removed from conducting anymore pastoral duties, he said the church disassociates itself from immoral, unlawful or reprehensible acts unbecoming of a pastor; he said the church is willing to cooperate with the investigators in whatever appropriate or is necessary and that the church is also expressing sympathy to the family affected, the accused pastor is to face the court sometime this week.

I hope that the youngster is being properly counselled and engaged towards some recovery, also I hope the court systems are taking into account the sensitivities involved and that the matter is tried ‘in camera’ (the accused and the victim) so as to avoid any unneeded exposure. The repeated mention dates and or preliminary hearings can be daunting for the victims in particular, to be asked to go to court to face the evil one or made to relive the matter.

I can only imagine the state of affairs in that household and by extension the rest of the church community and the condemnation on their part of the accused pastor seeing it is same gender sex matter, I raise that because of the justification of an ongoing matter of the Moravian pastor who was accused of assault of a fifteen year old girl. Many commentated openly that nothing was wrong with ‘a little sex’ and after all she is a girl and the accused pastor in that matter should be forgiven; the efforts by some who ought to know better to seemingly protect that pastor only threw salt in the wound and has left me wondering what other dark secrets ad out there that church boards are aware of but cover them up so as not to ruffle feathers. Apparently hetero-paedophile appearing abuse cases can or should be allowed some leeway because it the accepted straight sex but mention a male and all hell break loose. Comments made by overly fanatically sympathetic congregants and others that the Moravian pastor blasting those who accused them shows up the kinds of control some have over those who are easily led. But the Jamaica Star's Western Bureau reported:

Superintendent Clive Blair, who heads the Trelawny Police

The New Testament Church of God in Bunkers Hill, Trelawny, was clearly not a happy place on Sunday. While members were out in their numbers for morning service, it was quite obvious that the recent arrest of their leader, Pastor Presley Smith, had dampened their spirits.

The 27-year-old Smith was arrested last Friday, accused of grievous sexual assault, buggery and gross indecency against a 15-year-old boy, who is said to be a member of his congregation.

According to a member of the community, Smith recently baptised the young man he is now accused of molesting.

When the WESTERN STAR tried to get a comment from a member of Smith's congregation about the very serious charges against him, she turned her face away, started humming a song and quickened her steps. Other church members took a similar stance, refusing to discuss the matter.

Superintendent Clive Blair, the commanding officer for the Trelawny police, said Smith's arrest came after the matter was thoroughly investigated.

"Our understanding is that the alleged offences were committed over a period of time on a 15-year-old student of one of the high schools in the parish," Blair said.

When the WESTERN STAR reached out to Bishop Lloyd Lawrence, president of the Trelawny Ministers Fraternal, he said: "Before you go any further, I have no comment."

ENDS

I was not expecting the 'church' to quickly hit out at this given the collective position they have taken on the buggery law and implying a homo-paedophile construct to bolster their antigay position. Now that one of their own is caught in the very sexual abuse phenomenon what can they say, effectively not much. It would be interesting find out if the church would be so forgiving to welcome the accused pastor to the fold or either suggest reparative therapy or other psycho-sexual interventions. The matter is to heard in court soon.

Elder on sex charge has bail extended

meanwhile

Even as so many inappropriate cases that are simply disturbing come to the fore many as are asking what are these pastors getting so involved?

Are they only running churches to make money and psychologically lure persons into the flock under the guise of doing God's work?

The case in question:

The church elder, charged for engaging in sexual acts with a minor earlier this year, had his bail extended.

The prosecution is awaiting documentation from the Communications Forensic and Cybercrime Unit (CFCU) to move forward in the case.

The elder is 41-year-old Narry Hudson of Heywood Hall, St Mary. When the case was mentioned last Thursday, May 4, the prosecutor indicated that a medical was now on file in the case.

The case is now set for mention for the CFCU documents on July 27. Hudson’s bail was extended by senior parish judge Yvette Wentworth-Miller for that date.

Hudson was charged on Thursday, February 2 with grievous sexual assault, sexual grooming and having sex with a person under 16-years-old.

Hudson, an elder at Heywood Hall Seventh Day Adventist Church in St. Mary, was taken into custody by the Port Maria Police on Tuesday night, January 31.

He was arrested after the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) collected statements from a 14-year-old girl.

Hudson was later offered bail by senior parish judge Yvette Wentworth-Miller in the sum of $400,000 with one surety, when he appeared before the St Mary Parish Court on Monday, February 13.

As a condition of his bail, Hudson was to reside outside of the parish, in Portland.

Bail was offered after the prosecution had no objections to him being granted bail and the police having conducted the necessary interventions in the Heywood Hall community.

It was alleged at that time that persons from the area had not been supporting the complainant and her mother and had wanted them to leave the area.

Sad I'll try to track this one but with the rapid succession of cases punch us out we are losing track as many get lost in translation.

Sodom & Gomorrah, Lot, Daughters & Abuse

In the continuing series of Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April on this and sister blog GLBTQ Jamaica I have taken a more biblical approach this year to looking at some of the current issues. Some of the biblical texts being examined are often not preached or are avoided by the pulpit. The rapid succession of rather disturbing allegations and indeed convictions of pastors for sexual assault and rape of congregants and even children as a recent case showed is disturbing to say the least. In one case which was dealt with rather quickly given our court system, the little brother of the female victim witnessed the ordeal as the pastor lured them in his car and used snacks to try to divert his attention after taking the children supposedly without the mother’s permission to his home under the guise of caregiver for the time he had them; the pastor then tried to convince the little boy not to spill the beans but he did tell his mother. That little one is to praised for exposing the freakish pastor; I can only imagine the little one rehashing the awful sequence of events. The mother took the needed action by reporting it and the bastard of a Pentecostal pastor was arrested, tried and found guilty where he got a twenty years sentence, however the mother who obviously thought she did the right thing has been threatened, vilified and told to leave the church much to her dismay and by extension forced to leave her home by other congregants as she is said to have disrupted the church as some seem not to believe the allegations. The awful remarks outside the courtroom were enough. Isolated by people of the church when the very church is supposed to be a place of welcome and to throw out their own after she did the right thing is telling of the mindset.

Just a basic media scan since the rapid succession of accusations of pastoral abuse to include the popular televangelists and stations such as The Breath of Change, TBC hardly any discourse has come on the subject save and except for generalised commentary and the usual antigay narrative from the latter radio station. It just goes to show what we are up against with some of the churches who are more in using their power to condemn instead of embracing others and becoming so drunk with said power that we have the current issues. Of note twice convicted and antigay Reverend Al Miller who has been making a comeback slowly on television hardly has said a word but of course he was also been selective on sins and especially on homosexuality.

two of the accused Pastors from the Moravian Church (Gleaner photo)

The two other ongoing major matters involving the two Moravian pastors in court and carry over from older cases seem to be stalling where one of the Moravian matters is to be moved to the circuit court in another parish as there are jurisdiction concerns while the other can’t seem to move from the preliminary hearing stage. Even in those cases a similar obsessive supportive narrative from die hard congregants who can see no wrong in their leader which is another matter I may need to do a post on. What is even more egregious even frightening and somewhat deceptive by some is there is hardly any serious condemnation not to create outcasts but towards healing coming from places one would have expected. Coughed up press releases well after the height of the accusations is so hypocritical it is not funny, the stridency is another matter as if we were talking about homosexuality those church organizations and misguided antigay outfits would have been all over it like white on rice. The Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society, JCHS for example are the chief hypocrites involved, they did put out a weak press release similarly to the Umbrella group of churches but the consistency is not there. Instead a generalised strategy is used to obviously deflect the spotlight on long suspected clerical and pastoral abuse yet it is the same church overall that condemns everything else. This blog has carried previous arrests and convictions of clerical and pastoral abuse yet not a word comes from the cherry picking fanatics and all this happens while more sensible religious leaders say virtually nothing either as they are afraid or try to avoid being shouted out of the room by outfits like JCHS, Lawyers’ Christian Fellowship and the never Lovemarch.

Marches and stands condemning national sex crimes and other atrocities are commendable but where is the introspection, where are these groups on crime for example? Church groups trying in the late stage of the game presenting themselves as bastions of piety is so hypocritical. Now let us look at the Lot incest story with Lot and his daughters. The usual frame of reference from Genesis 19: 13 -38 in the liturgy or sermon is that the angels went to the Sodom & Gomorrah to supposedly find the pure in heart after the reported ‘wickedness’ there namely homosexuality for most pastors locally. But the first notion in the story of the somewhat abuse of females was when the soldiers came to Lot’s house he offered his daughters thinking the guards wanted sex; Genesis 19:8 (also see Judges 19-24) is clear:

“Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes; only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they came under the shadow of my roof.”

Women were seen a just incubators for sperm seen as all of nascent life and or for servitude or social commodities in the social pecking order. No abuse occurred however and the soldiers were struck with blindness. The story continues to when the angels usher Lot, his wife and his two daughters with specific instructions to include not to look back. She breaks the rules and is turned into a pillar of salt suggesting the materialistic element of it all as losing all that wealth may have been too much. Lot is left with the girls and they make their way to a cave. There endeth the justification for the destruction of Sodom for ‘homosexuality’ even as the city was seen as ‘wicked’ and in the minds of some theologians doomed for destruction long before the two angels arrived. Bear in mind that these are supposed to be the same angels who came to prophecy to Abraham that his wife Sarah who was barren will become pregnant and Abraham was said to be in negotiations with God as to the fate of the cities.

here is the Genesis chapter in question in full:

"1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.

3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:

5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,

7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.

8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.

9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.

10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.

11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:

13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it.

14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the Lord being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:

19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:

20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.

21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.

22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.

24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;

25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the Lord:

28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.

31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:

32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

37 And the first born bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.

38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day."

ENDS

I am convinced that many pastors do not go on to the rest of the story in fear of losing the ‘fire breathing’ element of the sermon which may make the pastor appear too soft on male homosexuality in particular wherein the daughters are accused of making their father drunk pursuant to incest as they believed that there was no other male in the bloodline so they had an obligation but to have sex with Lot so to continue the generations, given the procreation supportive early Judaism.

Evidently Lot was not too drunk to have gained a strong enough erection as an older man and the girl’s father to impregnate them but the girls are blamed for the incest as he did not know what was happening, his inebriation as the text is presented which may be a function of translation from the Hebrew to Greek/Latin to English in context and which also raises the business of the ‘rape’ of a man. There is a section of the text that effectively tries to paint Lot as a participant but a victim in a sense but without knowledge, often times than not the narrative places the shame on the daughters while exonerating Lot, in other words Lot cannot be blamed. Lot has been seen as opportunistic in his orientation, capitalistic in his motives and privatistic with his ethics at the expense of everything else including his offering of his daughters to the soldiers for them to rape her in lieu of been arrested or worse.

The incest ended up having long term implications for the early Jewish people and their arrangements, the narrative says very little in terms of Lot as the shame that eventually attended the subsequent two nations of Moab or Moabites and Ammon and Ammonites came about and that the father had sex with his daughters versus the divine grace of the people of Hadrian or early Jewish people who feel they are more the chosen ones as opposed to the descendants of Lot. The latter saw themselves as the legitimate people of God and that rift went on for a long time to come; it may even have an impact on present day challenges between Israel and the Palestinians.

Some more conservative Jewish review of the text suggest that the elder daughter was commended for committing the incest supposedly as she continued the bloodline, part of this linked to the aforementioned Moabites and Ammonites birthed from the encounter for example Ruth the Moabite marrying an Ammonite linking the lineage to Jesus; then came Moab, Jessie hence to David while bearing in mind an Ammonite was also married to Solomon. David had his own matter by way of Bathsheeba and affair whilst ordering the murder of her husband to get rid of the competition. Also this entire Lot incest affair occurred prior to the Levitical or holiness codes via Leviticus 18 while many patriarchs were married to blood relatives, Abraham was married to his half sister, his son Isaac was married to his first cousin (a practice still accepted in some circles and in many monarchic arrangements such as present Queen Elizabeth II is married to her Dutch cousin Phillip) yet Leviticus came later to discontinue said relationship types by way of the holiness codes. There is a criticism that Lot went to Sodom and effectively became rich there while ditching his own value systems and he sought to offer his daughters to the soldiers at the door but ended up in a kind of ‘serve him right’ payback in terms of sex and lowered participant in the whole affair.

My understanding of the incest laws here is that the man is the main accused in terms of sentences for men who go with a sister, aunt, mother, daughter but cousins seem not to be so covered directly; while as far as women are concerned as perpetrators it is in the context of the women consenting to sex with a close related male relative and not necessarily as she being the aggressor as we have come to understand the issue of rape. There is another element as well where some believe that the soldiers who came to Lot’s door to inquire of him who were the two men (the angels) in a bid to supposedly commit anal rape on them as a form of humiliation. I am still on the fence with that one but research is ongoing. There is a similar issue of incest in the rape of Tamar by her brother Amnon that also is disturbing to say the least and is often times not openly discussed or presented from the pulpit. I dealt with it in my own way on this post on sister blog GLBTQ Jamaica: Amnon rapes Tamar ........

Anti Gay National Parents' Teachers Assc of Jamaica Owes Taxes!

In a previous post (NPTAJ And Anti-Gay Groups Want J-FLAG Kept Out Of Schools & deal with homelessness)
I had looked at the National Parents' Teachers Association of Jamaica, NPTJA's homophobic stance on teaching on sexual orientation in schools. They just showed up their ignorance and misguided thinking on many fronts. At the time, sadly on JFLAG's part it was the second time most publicly was told off to go and address homelessness by an outside entity and individual, the first major one being this one: Mutabaruka: JFLAG & gov’t should do more for homeless gays

"The NPTAJ rejects totally, the offer made by J-FLAG to conduct counselling in schools," Hannam said. J-FLAG had said it is willing to help the education ministry and guidance counsellors improve their assistance to students who have problems with their sexuality. J-FLAG's offer of assistance came after news that some of the more than 800 guidance counsellors in the school system are refusing to help students identified as gay or lesbian. In a statement, the lobby group's executive director, Dane Lewis, said he is deeply concerned at the reports and is calling for the education ministry to intervene with strategies to equip counsellors to help students.

The national parent-teacher body has, however, viewed J-FLAG's offer with much suspicion, noting that the offer appears to be another attempt by J-FLAG to introduce elements of what was uprooted from a Home and Family Life (HFLE) curriculum early last year. The HFLE curriculum was the subject of much controversy after material highlighting homosexuality was discovered in a text book prescribed by the curriculum. Now with the issue of some guidance counselors allegedly refusing to offer counsel to lesbian and gay students igniting much public debate, the NPTAJ said it is rejecting any attempt by J-FLAG to offer counselling in schools.

Hannam argued that, "If JFLAG is serious about counselling, they can offer those services privately." He also called on the Ministry to reject the offer made by the gay-rights group. "Let the guidance counsellors do their job," he said.

now comes news of the entity NPTAJ OWES TAXES!, a group that is supposed to be wedded to Christian principles to include Christ's teaching on what is due unto to Caesar is due unto Caesar yet they have the gumption to chastise others.

meanwhile:

The National Parent-Teacher Association of Jamaica Ltd (NPTAJ) has been left embarrassed after the Registrar of Companies initiated court action to get annual returns that have not been submitted since the organisation was established in 2006.

A bill of $110,000 representing the accumulation of the yearly fees to file the returns plus penalties for not doing so has also been brought against the agency.

"Of course it is embarrassing," Everton Hannam, the president, told The Gleaner after being questioned about the impending Supreme Court trial. The application was filed last year.

Judith Ramlogan, the registrar of companies, said that the her agency was "constrained" to bring the lawsuit because the NPTAJ did not respond to notices sent to it.

Among the explanations given by the parent-teacher group was that the current executive did not know that the agency was expected to file returns.

The NPTAJ is a not-for-profit non-governmental organisation, and the president said: "We were not aware there were some returns that had to be filed annually. We don't pay persons; we don't have that kind of expenses."

"It was also due to the fact," he added, "that there needed to have been some changes with the directorship. A number of the initial directors would have migrated, and so that affected the transferring of information to the present team."

The registrar said that those reasons are the most common among delinquent entities. "When they (companies) register, we indicate to them what they need to do to stay current. That is largely ignored until a matter such as this arises."

The NPTAJ said that it is now pushing to settle the issue out of court, but because the issue is already before the Supreme Court, it will have to appear for the start of the trial to indicate its position to the judge.

... Looking at how to avoid filing returns
Going forward, however, Hannam said that the National Parent-Teacher Association of Jamaica's structures would have to be reviewed. They have to examine how to avoid filing the returns.

But, according to Ramlogan, there's no provision to avoid filing annual returns. "I know the argument is that they don't earn any money, but once you form a company, you are constrained to file annual returns."

The annual return is a document that gives a snapshot of any changes in the company over the year. Ramlogan said that changes are coming, however, to make it easier for making reports if there are no changes.

Getting a little sick and tired of the hypocritical piety by some yet their integrity cannot stand up to scrutiny, where oh where is the National Integrity Commission Action on this one?

St Lucian LGBT official blasts religious leaders

A Saint Lucia LGBT official has blasted Caribbean religious ministers who wrote a letter of concern to United States President, Donald Trump, urging the U.S to stop exporting its LGBT agenda.

The January 31, 2017 letter from religious officials in the Bahamas, Guyana, St. Maarten, St. Vincent, and Trinidad and Tobago, asserted that the Obama administration’s State Department deployed coercive measures to normalize same-sex marriage and elevate LGBT issues at the expense of human rights.

However Bennet Charles of the LGBT organization here, United and Strong, has described the letter as being sad and almost hypocritical.

The United and Strong Communications and Advocacy Officer recalled that during the first week in February, religious leaders from several Caribbean countries met in Trinidad to discuss playing a greater role in advancing issues related to HIV and AIDS care in the region.

The LGBT official told the Times that the agenda item was a big issue because of the impact of HIV and AIDS within the LGBT population.

He also made reference to the issue of violence against women and girls.

“Religious leaders within the Caribbean region have recognized the fact that people are losing faith in their religious leaders,” Charles told the Times.

He asserted that the once dominant religious organisations in the Caribbean are losing their members.

“I think they are very scared that people are becoming a lot more liberal and more open-minded when it comes to understanding how we accept and in some areas tolerate people of different sexual orientations – people of different religious persuasions,” the United and Strong official explained.

He accused Caribbean religious leaders of having remained silent on a number of occasions when the human rights of individuals have been violated.

Charles told the Times that the very administration of President Donald Trump has threatened to stop support to the International Family Planning Association, an organization the LGBT official said has been doing ‘immense good’ for women of the Caribbean region.

“There are so many other issues that we wish the religious leaders in the Caribbean would have asked for support from the Trump administration, but they choose to single out one specific issue because they believe that they are being threatened and they know that they are being threatened,” he stated.

Charles said Caribbean religious officials believe that the issues related to same-sex marriages and discussion represent North American policy.

But he told the Times that religious leaders need to understand and face the fact of what members of their congregations are going through, including persecution from within the ranks of their own religious organisations.

“Why are persons moving faiths, becoming more evangelical rather than hard line Catholics, Seventh Day Adventists – why is this happening?” Charles said.

He declared that as the only LGBT organization in Saint Lucia, United and Strong will continue to be the voice of those who are persecuted and persons against whom religions have turned their backs, forgetting that ‘each and every one of these persons is a child of God.’

Charles said he hoped Caribbean religious leaders will be willing to sit down, have ‘meaningful’ conversation with LGBT and human rights organisations and stop remaining mute on issues affecting the region.

“Instead of hiding behind a letter and trying to get Trump to do your work for you, we need you to get out as religious leaders and start meeting the people and understanding and dealing with the issues they are facing because they are members of your flock,” he stated.

According to Charles, those members of the flock are the ones who go to church every day.

He said they are lost sometimes and are trying to seek God.

“They look to you religious leaders for guidance but sadly, this guidance comes in the form of prejudice – ‘ You cannot be a child of God and be LGBT Gay or lesbian’ we think this is hypocritical,” the United and Strong official told the Times.

Charles expressed the hope that when all is said and done, Caribbean people can live as one despite differences in race, culture or sexual orientation.

Caribbean pastors ask U.S. to stop promoting LGBT rights overseas

Source: Washington Blade as more misguided hatred filled so called Christians continue using piety deceptively.

Nearly 300 religious officials from the Caribbean and Guyana have urged the U.S. to no longer promote LGBT and intersex rights abroad.

The 289 ministers who are from the Bahamas, St. Maarten, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana made the request in a letter they sent to President Trump on Jan. 31.

“We write to you as concerned Christian ministers and churches from the Caribbean region (including the Bahamas) who hope and pray that the United States, under your leadership, will once again cast a light from ‘The City upon a Hill’ of which your American forefathers and President Ronald Reagan so frequently spoke,” reads the letter. “Sadly, during recent years, that City has too often cast shadows instead of light.”

“We refer specifically to the policies of the U.S. State Department and other government agencies involved in foreign policy that have undertaken to coerce our countries into accepting a mistaken version of marriage,” it continues.

The letter specifically notes the appointment of Randy Berry as the special U.S. envoy for the promotion of LGBT and intersex rights in 2015 was central to “the promotion of same-sex marriage” in American foreign policy. It also questions then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s 2011 speech to the U.N. Human Rights Council in which she said “gay rights are human rights.”

“We have our rights by virtue of being human beings and not by anything else — not our ethnicity, not our religion, not our race, not our tribe and certainly not our sexual orientation,” reads the letter.

The letter also points out to Trump that “several of your government agencies” are “using executive orders to foist transgender confusion through the bathroom issue on your public schools by threatening the loss of federal funds.”

“Please understand that this same kind of coercion is being used against our countries to force us to fall in line with the entire same-sex agenda,” it reads.

The Obama administration last year advised public schools that Title IX of the U.S. Education Amendments of 1972 requires them to allow trans students to use bathrooms consistent with their gender identity. Trump rescinded this guidance on Feb. 22.
Guyanese group receives grants through Global Equality Fund

The promotion of LGBT and intersex rights abroad was a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy during Obama’s second term. The promotion of marriage rights for same-sex couples internationally was never a publicly articulated part of this strategy.

The Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination, a Guyanese advocacy group known by the acronym SASOD, has received grants through the Global Equality Fund, a public-private partnership the State Department manages with the U.S. Agency for International Development. Officials at the U.S. Embassy in the Guyanese capital of Georgetown also meet with SASOD staffers and support their efforts.

Dennis and Judy Shepard met with LGBT rights advocates, parents and officials at the U.S. Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago in 2014. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has also supported HIV/AIDS programs in the country.

Consensual same-sex sexual relations remain criminalized in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. St. Maarten recognizes same-sex marriages that are performed in the Netherlands.
Ministers’ letter is ‘appalling’

Steven Anderson, who was deported from Botswana last September, traveled to Guyana earlier this year. The anti-LGBT pastor from Arizona who has said gays and lesbians should be killed and described the victims of the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, Fla., as “disgusting homosexuals,” claims a hotel in Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, cancelled his reservation earlier this month.

Activists in the region with whom the Washington Blade spoke on Wednesday criticized the pastors who wrote to Trump.

“It’s appalling that they are pandering to President Trump — a head of state who has demonstrated nothing but prejudice and intolerance towards entire communities, immigrants and Muslims especially,” said SASOD Managing Director Joel Simpson.

Erin Greene, an LGBT and intersex rights advocate in the Bahamas, agreed.

“The statement and petition is a desperate move by a once powerful structure in Caribbean societies,” she told the Blade. “The Christian church was once the center of Caribbean societies, and now, these pastors are grasping to retain power and relevance as they are being stripped of their influence in policy making and national development.”

“In fact, they would be fulfilling their Christian mandate by denouncing the exportation of anti-LGBTI hate speech to the region, and asking President Trump to focus on foreign policy initiatives that prevent the spread the of U.S.-based religious terrorism in the Caribbean, Latin America and the Global South,” added Greene.

Bahamas Transgender Intersex United President Alexus D’Marco echoed Greene’s criticism while defending Obama, Clinton and Berry’s appointment.

“It is inconceivable that these ‘Christian’ reverend gentlemen and gentle ladies could not find the love of Christ in the hearts,” D’Marco told the Blade.

A State Department spokesperson on Friday said “protecting universal human rights is at the core of U.S. foreign policy.”

“All people should be protected from discrimination and violence, and must be allowed to exercise their human rights, including their rights to the freedoms of expression, association, peaceful assembly, and religion or belief,” the spokesperson told the Blade.

The White House did not respond to the Blade’s request for comment.

More JCHS HIV is a Gay Disease Nonsense & Gay Themed TV Content

What was supposed to be a discussion on gay content on free-to-air on television and the blocking of some of it nearly descended into something else. Guests on the show was Diana McCaulay more known as an Environmentalist, Kay Osbourne former Television Jamaica station manager (the same who featured in the gay ad/PSA fiasco and the JFJ Sex Ed course drama) and the star of the hour Dr Wayne West of the antigay Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society, JCHS. Thanks to the host of Beyond the Headlines on RJR Dionne Jackson Miller the veering off into the realm of paranoia was averted as she sought to reign in Dr Wayne West from making his HIV is gay disease case. The matter was also dealt with in the Star News publication as to the reaction to gay themes on the Disney Channel; given that Disney is a cable channel and not free-to-air so persons have a choice and can tailor their consumption by deciding which channels they want, unlike the old days of cable when cable operators offered a list of channels without an option to tailor it.

Meanwhile Dr Wayne West in his opening salvo went down the road of lung cancer instead of sticking to the script, as he tried to do a health risk comparison that nearly went off the rails, I was in stitches as he continued claiming that smoking caused cancer but people still smoke and so on and that they are 23 times likely to get it. Then came this:

“But the fact of the matter is if you are male who has intimate relationships with other males, your risk of HIV and syphilis for example in New York as studies have shown can be as high as 140 to 1 ............”

Thankfully Dionne Jackson Miller intervened most appropriately redeeming the going off the deep end journey when she asked:

“Tell me the point you’re making on this one though Dr Wayne West.” (She repeated)

But Dr Wayne West was not deterred by her efforts for a moment as he continued his clear strategy; leaving many of us by virtue of the comments that flowed on Twitter and asking what the hell does that has to do with the topic of discussion? Alternative facts I suppose.

“I think it is irresponsible to argue that there is a right to behaviour that has some high risk with disease,” he continued and tried to out shout the host but Mrs Miller as experienced as is yet again was forced to pull on the reigns.

“Hold on, I do beg your pardon ....... in relation to the specific issues though how do you balance the [West tries to interrupt] the specific issue we are talking about, about content?”

West replies:

“............Because we are showing cartoons to children and suggesting that same sex behaviour is a variant of normal like heterosexual behaviour when the health risk of same sex behaviour are so staggering.”

I don’t know how the angels in heaven did hear me laughing; Dr West continued the nonsense as Mrs Miller asked:

“When you say ‘we are showing’ though meaning what?”

He said such as Disney and he then went on to suggest someone should take a lawsuit against them although this is supposed to be a cable channel that persons can choose not to engage and also conveniently overlooking the right of freedom of choice and speech, virtues held dear by Americans. The shock of the comment was palpable as the short silence or dead airtime suggested.

The Mrs Miller intervened nicely:

“This is a cable channel, you have to choose to accept it [West says in America] no, no in Jamaica as well. It’s cable you have to choose to have it in your house.”

Even though the point was driven home so forcefully the man still insists, you could hear the pity in Mrs Miller’s cadence of speech almost to suggest why did I invite this idiot to my show?

West continued:

“I gather that our local stations FLOW did not show some series which had some same sex thing in it and I think that is a wise decision. I wish someone in the United States will take a class action suit against Disney for ...........” [Audio got muffled but the giggling was audible]

Poor Mrs Miller tried her best as before as she intervened to redeem the obviously appearing descent into madness:

“Dr West, Dr West, Dr West its cable channel, you don’t have to have it in your house; you choose to have it .............. What I’m trying to get from you Dr West in a society like ours then especially with different channels, how do you balance it because I hear your concerns about the type of content full stop, right, but given the fact that we do live in a pluralistic society and we live in a society with different kinds of channels so for example I have friends who say they don’t have cable at all in their house, it’s just free-to-air, so what do you think we need to start with?”

Bizarrely this is the same man who suggested a class action lawsuit to supposedly stop Disney just moments before he then says:

“I don’t like censoring I think it’s dangerous for a democratic society ....”

Mrs Miller’s reaction represented the rest of us I imagine as I did die with laughter and some pity when she asked:

“You don’t like censoring!”

West responded:

“I don’t like to censor .... I think it’s a dangerous path to take, I think you can show various shows one o’clock or two o’clock in the morning accordingly to protect children but I really disagree with censoring information, I think it is a dangerous path follow.

What I would argue is that we must discuss these things in a sensible manner [Mrs Miller asked meaning what?] there are no rights to disease producing behaviour, that is ridiculous.”

Mrs Miller’s audible exhale was enough even as Kay Osbourne and Diana
McCaulay tried to get a word in and as my laughter and no doubt others in earshot of this must have been loud at this point. Mrs Miller tried to bring some sense back into the exchange. She sought to reiterate the parameters of the discussion.

“Let me just say one thing I don’t want to spend time on this issue of men having sex with men and AIDS because Dr West I am sure you know it and it has been said to you many times it is a very nuanced discussion, it relates to access to care and discrimination and many other issues that I don’t have time to discuss in this context.”

Diana
McCaulay opened with:

“I too don’t want to discuss the HIV question, that’s not what I was asked to talk about.”

She continued that it was hilarious to hear Dr West say he does not support censorship when he wants to decide what is suitable for audiences, even in a situation where persons will drive to a movie and pay to see a film. Meanwhile Miss Kay Osbourne’s remarks were not convincing to me at all, she seemed to dancing between the raindrops given her history and previous comments on homosexuality and the aforementioned hint to the gay ad/PSA court case and her decision not to air the clip which eventually led to a lawsuit. She attempted to try to strike a balance on tolerance but struggled somewhat on how it should be. She then went on to link heterosexual sex with also a disease components, that of cervical cancer and HPV. She tried to make the point that not only gay men who supposed are ‘harmed’ by disease through sexual activity.

Mrs Miller yet again had to intervene:

“Before the discussion goes entirely off the rail [laughter as Miss Osbourne tries to balance her point as she puts it] and I am now shutting the door on STDs and AIDS [laughter] let me try and get ....... we do have plenty of those discussion but in the context of what we are talking about here let me go back to Diana
McCaulay”

She said she was offended by the materialism as a new religion, reality television but said her offendedness does not go to the realm of pure censorship. The point was made by Mrs Miller on the Broadcasting Commission’s guidelines as to content for free-to-air television and of course radio. Miss Osbourne said that managers of content have an enormous task to act as gatekeepers to filter some of the materials; frankly it was a laborious listening experience as she sounded as if she was searching for the words.

Then Dr Wayne West jumped off into the nihilistic arguments as usual, claiming Americans have come to accept an anything goes or no absolute morality. He claimed that if we are prepared to accept nihilism then we must be prepared to accept anything in the public square. He said that the filter therefore is up to the individual in their private space to determine what comes in a bid “protect our children from this ethos of nihilism.”

He continued that if the public square is nihilistic then the law is or will become nihilistic (the usual moral panic strategy) and it will be imposed upon children through the education curricula (referencing the HFLE fiasco and Sex Ed course uproar in 2013/4/5).

Mrs Miller brought back the Broadcasting Commission’s regulations on the table and reminded everyone that free-to-air already has strong filters. West linked the Judaeo-Christian framework to the reasons why those regulations are there and sought to suggest that the whittling away of that by itself will lead to moral decay. He claims that the framework has been rejected by the USA & Canada (homosexuality is foreign import ploy) which what causes the nihilism but Mrs Macaulay nailed it when she said that if we are to follow that framework women would be stoned for adultery and she continued that framing that there is no right or wrong in North American countries that are tolerant of diversity is simply not true. West went into the whole bit on the theocracy of Israel while leaving out the Levitical imperative and the holiness codes for a short period of time; finally he seems to have come to some enlightenment however small. He continued that a Christian world view informed those preparations of regulations.

When asked about where we are today and sections of the public objecting to gay content West said that he still does not agree with censorship in terms of speech and that it would be difficult to restrict content in other areas and then he went back on the education curricula and that perception of sneaky methods to bring in homosexuality through the back door. He claimed yet again that if society is nihilistic then homosexuality will work its way in (more moral panic drama). The usual conflation of freedom to be homosexual is directly correlated to nihilism is just plain worn out. It came up in the recent sexual offences bill debate submissions and hinted to in the affidavit in the pending constitutional challenge of the buggery law.

Television Jamaica of which RJR – Radio Jamaica Radio is a part of the recent communications group 1834 Limited already blocks and censor certain content, including some gay themes. The American series Empire continue to have its gay scenes especially those of an intimate nature blocked, despite it appears at 10pm. The daytime South African soap opera import Generations (I am a big fan) also has a gay couple but the screenplay deliberately avoid kissing scenes even after a near successful vigorous campaign to block such and demands of writing out of the story line gay themes. The show then went the route of opposite sex cheating by one of the parties in a bid to bisexualize the character but it seems not to have worked well. The gay couple still remains.

I find it ridiculous frankly that some persons are so still so fearful of just gay themes on a screen as if to suggest there is some invisible gamma ray that is going to ‘homosexualise’ all those who come into view of those themes on screen. A good question to ask of Dr West is if both parties (MSM) are HIV negative and they have anal sex without a condom or a condom but it broke what will they pass? It would be good to get the answer to that one.

Finally

Diana
McCaulay ended the interview by redeeming the situation, she suggested that the fearmongering has to stop and while the speech may not be violent it can push physical violence.

Gay scenes in Disney show gets angry reactions

So the Star news carried this one today and it has hit a nerve once again as to the rejection of LGBT matters in the mainstream while not inappropriately encouraging questionable behaviour.

The actual gay kiss that ignited the furore

The child-focused Disney channel has been facing heated backlash in Jamaica recently, with many claiming that it is pushing a gay agenda.

This, after it aired a same-sex scene in a TV show, and announced plans to feature a lead gay character in an upcoming film.

Among those calling for the channel to be banned from the air in the country is popular dancehall producer and selector Foota Hype.

He reposted a screenshot of Disney Channel's first same-sex kiss, featured on one of its most popular shows, Star vs The Forces of Evil.

Originally shared by popular online media platform, The Shade Room, the image shows two male cartoon characters sharing a compassionate embrace, much to the chagrin of the selector.

UNFIT FOR CHILDREN

Foota's Instagram post read in its caption:

"Well, let's see if [Lisa Hanna] and the Prime Minister gonna move to ban Disney channel off every cable provider in Jamaica as it's unfit for kids and will corrupt their minds. Most important, being gay is illegal by law in Jamaica so I'll wait patiently for their input, hope it will be speedy and widely spoken like when they discriminate against my dancehall."

Yesterday, Foota said the country's leaders, using moral equivalence regardless of political affiliation, must understand they "cannot crucify dancehall music and leave everything else open."

 Hero Blair Jr (Star News)

But prominent minister of religion Reverend Herro Blair Jr is calling on the family to protect children from the normalisation of homosexuality that has been permeating the media.

"It's going to be difficult to cry for censorship now when we have not cried for censorship with shows such as Empire and everyone of these shows that have a homosexual character. The kids are already being told that this is an alright way of life," Blair reasoned.

He said families must do their own censorship.

"We have to decide from the homes what we want for our families. The parents must say if Disney is going to be showing these things, let us put the pressure on them by not watching or not accepting it as a cable channel for our children," he said

I cannot understand why some persons believe that a kiss on screen in a fictional piece is going to somehow emit some radio active gamma rays to zap all in view towards a homosexual orientation is just pitiful and almost laughable to me.

Meanwhile, Latoya Nugent, associate director at the JFLAG, told THE STAR that she is aware of the discussion that has been taking place regarding the Disney content, but the organisation is focusing its energies on pertinent issues.

"We are concerned about the violence against women and children, and while we are in fact an advocacy organisation, we have to be strategic about how we engage the media and about what kind of issues," Nugent said.

That to me sounds like a load of nonsesne when it is in fact the same JFLAG that proports itself to be the foremost NGO for LGBT matters and here comes a reaction that is directly linked to the work. Also given the homo-paedophile  links over the years that is often part of the sub-text of denial of any considerations for 'LGBT rights'

Ginnalship or common sense really Espeut on the definition of rape?

If we’re to follow Catholic priest & sometimes environmentalist Peter Espeut he like Dr Wayne West of the fanatical crew at the Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society, JCHS we would be led to believe the ‘gay agenda’ is on in earnest. Somehow there is some invisible hand as enacted through the lobbyists to supposedly homosexualise everyone and everything else while how conveniently nearly a 100% overlooking the clerical abuse matters in his own church let alone the rapid succession of cases in recent months involving all different kinds of church denominations. We don’t see large mobilization efforts to block the roads or cram central locations such as Half Way Tree for that but let it be a matter on ‘gay rights’ of if the victims of the sexual abuse were boys and the call for blood would have been much louder; they might even try to twin that with some homo-paedophile intent with the law reform agenda so as to justify their argument; deception indeed even from so called men of God who only use piety to fool the public.

The ongoing sexual offences review has come to a juncture of the definition of rape but not for the first time before under previous government administrations. The hot button issue is how to carefully define what is rape as for many years men are not covered under rape, minors are also not covered in terms of buggery committed on them by an adult where there is obviously no consent involved on the minor’s part by the mere fact it involves a minor. For years lobbyists have been making this point but roadblocks such as a strategy change from asking for a full repeal of buggery to an amendment (the much more sensible option from the start) have only sought to delay and skew the thrust, this despite the savings law clause being in effect prior to the replacing of section three of the constitution with the charter of rights. The draft of that charter in 1999 up to about 2002 or so had a discrimination protection clause related to sexual orientation protection feature but was vigorously fought by people such as Espeut, Shirley Richards and the two times convicted Reverend Al Miller. So folks such as Espeut are still stuck in the old language land of repeal instead of amendment which to me is middle ground in all this. Despite we have a middle ground buttressed by consent considerations involving adults while offering better protection for minors outside of a carnal abuse and child care and protection acts religious crack pots who make the rest of the church look bad still vehemently resist.

Espeut’s article in the Gleaner on Ginnalship shows up the fallacy but his lack or stridency in the church abuse department is disturbing to say the least and especially in his own church that for hundreds of years it is surmised has covered up members of the priesthood abusing boys in particular; lest we forget the very Catholics got involved in running brothels in England in the fourteenth century at one point and made a financial killing under Popes such as Gregory VII who monopolised marriage in 1037 and charged hefty fees for special aristocratic dispensations for cousin to cousin unions via an ecclesiastical seventh degree of consanguinity law. Seems Espeut wants to police us all as previous popes have attempted.

He tried to sound concerned about the ongoing clerical abuse matter in a radio interview on Newstalk 93FM but his tone sounded more discomforted in the interview than really concerned as if he had to discuss the matter as he was called upon to do so or he tried to pass it off as if it was another denomination’s problem and not his, thankfully the hosts of the show brought him back to reality as they suggested it is the catholic church that seems to have set the benchmark for said abuse. This is bearing in mind the denial of said abuse in Jamaica is ongoing by the establishment of the church here in the form of the local Bishop. But cover ups are usually well preserved by well cloaked devices and people often wrapped in piety in this case as God’s representatives on earth do not engage in such things.

Espeut claims among other things that:

"Placing all these other activities under the category of 'sexual intercourse' puts them on equal footing with penis-vagina penetration, and normalises them. Changing the definition of rape to include forced anal sex will imply that consensual buggery should be legal, and is a samfie attempt to legalise buggery through the back door. That is why J-FLAG and the pro-gay public defender support the redefinition.

But what is the injury that the redefinition is supposed to redress? Currently, men who sexually impose themselves upon other men can be charged with 'grievous sexual assault', which carries a maximum penalty on summary conviction in the parish court of a prison term not exceeding three years, and on conviction in the circuit court, to imprisonment for life or other penalties in the discretion of the judge, but not less than a 15-year prison term.

Buggery itself carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. The crime of rape (forced vaginal penetration), as currently defined, carries a maximum penalty of imprisonment for life.

But it is not hard to see the ginnalship. What it will really do is provide the grounds for an argument to equalise and legalise and normalise all forms of sexual intercourse, including buggery, as long as there is consent of all the parties, and that is why the LGBTQI activists and all the libertarians have taken to the airwaves and the print media to support it.

And it is no surprise that the Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society and other Christian groups have quickly come out against this attempt to normalise what they consider to be abnormal, unnatural and bestial acts; and predictably, this has drawn the fire of anti-Christian elements in the media. We have our culture wars here in Jamaica, too!

If the goal is to equalise in law the punishment of forced anal sex and forced vaginal sex, the obvious and easiest approach is to equalise the penalties for rape (forced vaginal sex) and grievous sexual assault (which includes forced anal sex and many other things besides)."

Espeut tries the outside looking in strategy when it comes to the JCHS yet he supports them wholeheartedly as it is well known. He also suggested the Sunday February 5 on RJR FM’s That’s a Rap weekend news review show that to even out the disparity between buggery, grievous sexual assault and marital rape considerations then all three should have the same punishment, in other words increasing buggery’s seven to ten year sentences to life imprisonment similar to rape when tried in the circuit/jury courts. At the parish court level judges are limited to a maximum of seven years if parties are found guilty. He does not want the limitation of rape of vaginal intercourse only to change despite the clear common sense of it all staring us all in the face while leaving out the abuse of boys via forced anal penetration.

Espeut among other things said:

“The penalties for the different offence are widely different; the solution would be make the penalties more equal without changing the definition (rape) ........ because you see if we change the definition of rape to include anal penetration but you see rape is normally accepted with consent but without consent that’s the crime.

So if you make anal sex rape then what you’re suggesting is that is possible to have anal sex/buggery with consent and therefore the people who are against this are quite correct, that to redefine rape to include anal sex does in fact by definition anal sex with consent legal and that is the source of the problem.

It seems to me that the solution would be make the penalties for all of these things equivalent and then we won’t have a problem.”

He continued:

“The LGBT people are looking for an opportunity to legalise buggery and to call rape to include anal sex into rape will provide that opportunity and therefore people are not going to go for it.........”

This is despite there is also no concept of rape in the offences against the persons act, and the over arching considerations of personal choice via consent, a matter to be determined by the very parties involved but folks like Espeut want to continue to police our choices and indeed bodies if he could more as which hole we should plug. It is pitiful this is the backwardness we still have to contend with in the twenty first century. He also claims that the implied marginalization of boys, girls in some context and women too in others the only way to solve that is to increase the punishment, so punish away because I am pure thinking comes through yet again. Higher penalties for supposed sexual sins will deal with the marginalization in his eyes.

And so what is wrong with entering the BACK DOOR! as Espeut puts it when as ADULTS with CONSENT we so choose to do? He can come stand by my door and peek through my keyhole and see the dick go in.

A look at the fear of the feminine (Effemophobia) by Jamaican standards & how it drives the homo-negative perceptions/homophobia in Jamaican culture/national psyche.

After catching midway a radio discussion on the subject of Jamaica being labelled as homophobic I did a quick look at the long held belief in Jamaica by anti gay advocates, sections of media and homophobes that several murders of alleged gay victims are in fact 'crimes of passion' or have jealousy as their motives but it is not as simple or generalized as that.

The Hypocrisy of Jamaican Anti Gay Groups & Selective Actions of Societal Ills

The selectivity of the anti gay religious voices on so called societal ills is examined in this podcast as other major issues that require the "church" to have spoken up including sexual abuse by pastors in recent times yet mere silence on those matters is highlighted.

Why are these groups and so called child rights activists creating mass hysteria and have so much strength for HOMOSEXUALITY but are quiet on corruption in government, missing children, crime in the country and so much more but want to stop same gender loving persons from enjoying peace of mind and PRIVACY?

Also is the disturbing tactic of deliberately conflating paedophilia with same gender sex as if to suggest reforming the buggery law will cause an influx of buggered children when we know that is NOT TRUE.

MSM/Trans homeless - From gully to graveyard

When are lives interrupted be allowed a real honest chance to move from interruption to independence and stability? I just cannot tell you friends.

An article appeared in the gleaner today that just sent me into sadness mode again with this ugly business of LGBTQI homelessness. The author of the piece needs an intervention too as he (Ryon Jones) uses terms such as cross dressers and or homeless men which if transgender persons are present they cannot be described or seen as such, sigh another clear display of the lack of impact and reach of so called advocacies and advocates who are more interested in parading as working but really aint having much impact as they ought to or claim.

We are told of houses being put together from time in memorial; the Dwayne’s House project seems dead in the water, the Larry Chang (named after a JFLAG cofounder) seems stuck in the mud and Colour Pink’s so called Rainbow House seems insignificant in relation to the size and scope of the national problem. JFLAG as presented on this blog is obviously not interested in getting their hands dirty really on homelessness save and except for using the populations as cannon fodder and delegating same; as far as I am concerned presenting them as victims of homophobia which is true but where are the programs and the perceived millions donated or granted since President Obama’s visit to address LGBTQ matters?

Dr Shelly Ann Weeks on Homophobia - What are we afraid of?

Former host of Dr Sexy Live on Nationwide radio and Sexologist tackles in a simplistic but to the point style homophobia and asks the poignant question of the age, What really are we as a nation afraid of?

It seems like homosexuality is on everyone's tongue. From articles in the newspapers to countless news stories and commentaries, it seems like everyone is talking about the gays. Since Jamaica identifies as a Christian nation, the obvious thought about homosexuality is that it is wrong but only male homosexuality seems to influence the more passionate responses. It seems we are more open to accepting lesbianism but gay men are greeted with much disapproval.

Dancehall has certainly been very clear where it stands when it comes to this issue with various songs voicing clear condemnation of this lifestyle. Currently, quite a few artistes are facing continuous protests because of their anti-gay lyrics. Even the law makers are involved in the gayness as there have been several calls for the repeal of the buggery law. Recently Parliament announced plans to review the Sexual Offences Act which, I am sure, will no doubt address homosexuality.

Jamaica has been described as a homophobic nation. The question I want to ask is: What are we afraid of? There are usually many reasons why homosexuality is such a pain in the a@. Here are some of the more popular arguments MORE HERE

JFLAG Excludes Homeless MSM from IDAHOT Symposium on Homelessness

Reminder

In a shocking move JFLAG decided not to invite or include homeless MSM in their IDAHO activity for 2013 thus leaving many in wonderment as to the reason for their existence or if the symposium was for "experts" only while offering mere tokenism to homeless persons in the reported feeding program. LISTEN TO THE AUDIO ENTRY HERE sad that the activity was also named in honour of one of JFLAG's founders who joined the event via Skype only to realize the issue he held so dear in his time was treated with such disrespect and dishonor. Steps to take when confronted by the police & your rights compromised:

a) Ask to see a lawyer or Duty Council

b) Only give name and address and no other information until a lawyer is present to assist

c) Try to be polite even if the scenario is tense

d) Don’t do anything to aggravate the situation

e) Every complaint lodged at a police station should be filed and a receipt produced, this is not a legal requirement but an administrative one for the police to track reports

f) Never sign to a statement other than the one produced by you in the presence of the officer(s)

g) Try to capture a recording of the exchange or incident or call someone so they can hear what occurs, place on speed dial important numbers or text someone as soon as possible

h) File a civil suit if you feel your rights have been violated

i) When making a statement to the police have all or most of the facts and details together for e.g. "a car" vs. "the car" represents two different descriptions

j) Avoid having the police writing the statement on your behalf except incases of injuries, make sure what you want to say is recorded carefully, ask for a copy if it means that you have to return for it

Vacant at Last! ShoemakerGully: Displaced MSM/Trans Persons were is cleared December 2014

CVM TV carried a raid and subsequent temporary blockade exercise of the Shoemaker Gully in the New Kingston district as the authorities respond to the bad eggs in the group of homeless/displaced or idling MSM/Trans persons who loiter there for years.

Question is what will happen to the population now as they struggle for a roof over their heads and food etc. The Superintendent who proposed a shelter idea (that seemingly has been ignored by JFLAG et al) was the one who led the raid/eviction.

New Kingston Cop Proposes Shelter for Shoemaker Gully LGBT Homeless Population

Superintendent Murdock

The same cop who has factored in so many run-ins with the youngsters in the Shoemaker Gully (often described as a sewer by some activists) has delivered on a promise of his powerpoint presentation on a solution to the issue in New Kingston, problem is it is the same folks who abandoned the men (their predecessors) from the powerful cogs of LGBT/HIV that are in earshot of his plan.

This ugly business of LGBTQ homelessness and displacements or self imposed exile by persons has had several solutions put forth, problem is the non state actors in particular do not want to get their hands dirty as the more combative and political issues to do with buggery's decriminalization or repeal have risen to the level of importance more so than this. Let us also remember this is like the umpteenth meeting with the cops, some of the LGBT homeless persons and the advocacy structure.

Remember JFLAG's exclusion of the group from that IDAHO symposium on LGBT homelessess? See HERE, how can we ask the same people who only want to academise and editorialise the issue to also try to address their own when they do not want to get their hands dirty but publish wonderful reports as was done earlier this month, see HERE: (re)Presenting and Redressing LGBT Homelessness in Jamaica: Towards a Multifaceted Approach to Addressing Anti-Gay Related Displacement also LGBT homelessness has always been with us from the records of Gay Freedom Movement(1974) to present but the current issues started from 2009, see: The Quietus ……… The Safe House Project Closes and The Ultimatum on December 30, 2009 as carried on sister blog Gay Jamaica Watch. BUSINESS DOWNTURN FOR THE WEED-WHACKING PROJECT FOR FORMER DISPLACED ST CATHERINE MSM

As promised here is another periodical update on an income generating/diligence building project now in effect for some now seven former homeless and displaced MSM in St Catherine, it originally had twelve persons but some have gotten jobs elsewhere, others have simply walked away and one has relocated to another parish, to date their weed whacking earning business capacity has been struggling as previous posts on the subject has brought to bear.

Although some LGBT persons residing in the parish have been approached by yours truly and others to increase client count for the men costs such as gas and maintenance of the four machines that are rotated between the enrolled men are rising weekly literally while the demand is instead decreasing due to various reasons.

Newstalk 93FM's Issues On Fire: Polygamy Should Be Legalized In Jamaica 08.04.14

debate by hosts and UWI students on the weekly program Issues on Fire on legalizing polygamy with Jamaica's multiple partner cultural norms this debate is timely.

Also with recent public discourse on polyamorous relationships, threesomes (FAME FM Uncensored) and on social.

What to Do .....

a. Make a phone call: to a lawyer or relative or anyone

b. Ask to see a lawyer immediately: if you don’t have the money ask for a Duty Council

c. A Duty Council is a lawyer provided by the state

d. Talk to a lawyer before you talk to the police

e. Tell your lawyer if anyone hits you and identify who did so by name and number

f. Give no explanations excuses or stories: you can make your defense later in court based on what you and your lawyer decided

g. Ask the sub officer in charge of the station to grant bail once you are charged with an offence

h. Ask to be taken before a justice of The Peace immediately if the sub officer refuses you bail

i. Demand to be brought before a Resident Magistrate and have your lawyer ask the judge for bail

j. Ask that any property taken from you be listed and sealed in your presence

Cases of Assault:An assault is an apprehension that someone is about to hit you

The following may apply:

1) Call 119 or go to the station or the police arrives depending on the severity of the injuries

2) The report must be about the incident as it happened, once the report is admitted as evidence it becomes the basis for the trial

3) Critical evidence must be gathered as to the injuries received which may include a Doctor’s report of the injuries.

4) The description must be clearly stated; describing injuries directly and identifying them clearly, show the doctor the injuries clearly upon the visit it must be able to stand up under cross examination in court.

5) Misguided evidence threatens the credibility of the witness during a trial; avoid the questioning of the witnesses credibility, the tribunal of fact must be able to rely on the witness’s word in presenting evidence

6) The court is guided by credible evidence on which it will make it’s finding of facts

7) Bolster the credibility of a case by a report from an independent disinterested party.

Notes on Bail & Court Appearance issues

If in doubt speak to your attorney

Bail and its importance -

If one is locked up then the following may apply:
Locked up over a weekend - Arrested pursuant to being charged or detained There must be reasonable suspicion i.e. about to commit a crime, committing a crime or have committed a crime.

There are two standards that must be met:

1). Subjective standard: what the officer(s) believed to have happened

2). Objective standard: proper and diligent collection of evidence that implicates the accused To remove or restrain a citizen’s liberty it cannot be done on mere suspicion and must have the above two standards

 Police officers can offer bail with exceptions for murder, treason and alleged gun offences, under the Justice of the Peace Act a JP can also come to the police station and bail a person, this provision as incorporated into the bail act in the late nineties

 Once a citizen is arrested bail must be considered within twelve hours of entering the station – the agents of the state must give consideration as to whether or not the circumstances of the case requires that bail be given

 The accused can ask that a Justice of the Peace be brought to the station any time of the day. By virtue of taking the office excluding health and age they are obliged to assist in securing bail

"Bail is not a matter for daylight

Locked up and appearing in court

 Bail is offered at the courts office provided it was extended by the court; it is the court that has the jurisdiction over the police with persons in custody is concerned.

 Bail can still be offered if you were arrested and charged without being taken to court a JP can still intervene and assist with the bail process.

Other Points of Interest

 The accused has a right to know of the exact allegation

 The detainee could protect himself, he must be careful not to be exposed to any potential witness

 Avoid being viewed as police may deliberately expose detainees

 Bail is not offered to persons allegedly with gun charges

 Persons who allegedly interfere with minors do not get bail

 If over a long period without charge a writ of habeas corpus however be careful of the police doing last minute charges so as to avoid an error

 Every instance that a matter is brought before the court and bail was refused before the accused can apply for bail as it is set out in the bail act as every court appearance is a chance to ask for bail

 Each case is determined by its own merit – questions to be considered for bail:

a) Is the accused a flight risk?

b) Are there any other charges that the police may place against the accused?

c) Is the accused likely to interfere with any witnesses?

d) What is the strength of the crown’s/prosecution’s case?

 Poor performing judges can be dealt with at the Judicial Review Court level or a letter to the Chief Justice can start the process

Battle Lines Javed Jaghai versus the state & the Jamaica Buggery Law

Originally aired on CVM TV December 8th 2013, apologies for some of the glitches as the source feed was not so hot and it kept dropping from source or via the ISP, NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED and is solely for educational and not for profit use and review. The issue of the pending legal challenge in the Constitutional Court in Jamaica as filed by Javed Jaghai an outspoken activist who happens also to be openly aetheist.

The opposing sides are covered as well such as
The Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society
The Love March
Movement Jamaica

The feature seems destined for persons who are just catching up to the issues and repositioning JFLAG in particular in the public domain as their image has taken a beating in some respects especially on the matter of the homeless MSM front. They need to be careful that an elitist perception is not held after this after some comments above simplistic discourse, the use of public agitation as beneath some folks and the obvious overlooking of the ordinary citizen who are realy the ones who need convincing to effect the mindset change needed and the national psyche's responses to homosexuality in general.
