Shebada seen on the left is a character from a stage production running here in Jamaica he is well known & liked and the "borderline" comment comes from a famous line in one of his productions, interestingly Jamaicans will digest gay type characters on stage or in print as shown in the cartoon above but homophobia remains a ticklish issue.
Shebada is very effeminate but in his entourage when I last saw him which was a few days ago consists of hardened thugs (maybe body guards) as I am sure he knows he may have enemies out there who disapprove of his openness in working this character.
here is an excerpt judge for yourself, the Granny character is also played by a man:
the use of female type impersonation has always been a treat for many. What an ironic situation eh in our homophobic state.
Shebada's character is not far removed from the realities on the ground of effeminate gay men, the emphasis is placed however of self acceptance and awareness of a good physical presentation than psychological development, there are many including gays from higher social strata who strongly disapprove of the "sketel" type behaviour.
Look at the emphasis on the suggestive dancing. A clear product of the class contempt that is still strong here.
Sketel: a word derived from the dancehall idiom referring to a female who depends on friends to get clothes for parties and outlandish behavior without a care of what others think.

Jamaica is SUCH a paradox. On the positive side, the Arts, in this case drama though of questionable quality [do I sound elitist?] is an effective and non-threatening way to prod societal change.
The type of comedy which Shebada takes part in is uniquely Jamaican, and I love it! Sure, it's no Shakespeare, but we are not living in Victorian England either (though our conservative morality would suggest otherwise).
I guess this is somewhere to start. Homosexuality (though I am not sure Mr. Ramsay has publicly declared his sexuality) now has a face, albeit the stereotypical one, which does not fit all gay men.
He is changing hearts though. I've heard people say, "wi fi lef di man alone" in defending his alleged "homosexual behaviour. "He is a good entertainer, and nothing else no fi matter." Who knew my Christian mother would ever support the view that people's sexuality should not matter.
