So Rev Chisholm departs from his JCHS colleagues on the Phonebook kerfuffle

As I live and breathe I never thought I would see a departure by partner in crime to the antigay establishment of the Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society, JCHS although he hardly names them in a letter to the Observer on the issue entitled "Yellow Pages teacup storm" also see my take on the issue on sister blog GLBTQ Jamaica "Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society gets worked up over a phonebook!"

The selectivity on issues by this one group supposedly in the name of a healthy society is so hypocritical it's not funny. But first let us see what the goodly Reverend had to say:

Dear Editor,

If you have a problem with the front cover of your copy of the current Jamaican Yellow Pages telephone directory (dancehall scene) why not just flip it over to the back cover (ska/rocksteady scene), or better still just tear off the flipping front cover.

This is a simple solution to a simple problem in my view. The cover is almost literally a flat (two-dimensional) cardboard photo and that disturbs or turns on some of us? Give me a break!

Now, though I am trained in music and philosophy, and have been a Christian for 49 years, I would not venture to do any kind of research at a live dancehall session because I personally could not “plead the blood of Jesus” fervently enough to keep all sections of my anatomy calm. Even then, my possible response to the visual stimuli in that setting would be essentially saying much more about me than about the gyrating female bodies I would be viewing.

Apropos this stimulus/response issue, two illustrations have been brought to my attention in recent months. One, squeeze a peeled orange as hard and as long as you can and you will never ever get lime juice from the effort. This is because of the internal make-up of orange which determines its response to squeezing. If a skimpily clad lady, or one who is not exactly small-breasted or of a small derriere, turns me on sexually that response is essentially because of my internal make-up.

The other illustration relates to grains of sand in an eye as opposed to in an oyster. Sand in an eye irritates and harms, but in an oyster a pearl is likely because the make-up of the eye does not allow for a response other than irritation/harm, whereas the make-up of the oyster leads to a pearl response.

Whether it is the sculpture at Emancipation Park, the current Yellow Pages ‘dancehall cover’, or whatever, let’s not forget or downplay the fact that our response to any given work of art may be more suggestive of the kind of person we are than about the aesthetico-moral calibre of the work of art.

Maybe I just need Jesus, but Church leaders need to revisit their definition (if they have one) and defence of what we regard as pornography.

This ‘controversy’ is really more like fomenting a category 5 storm in a thimble than a storm in a teacup. For the young and innocent, a thimble is a tiny sewing device.

Wow the response is very direct and indirect as I hinted above but his point on the response to artwork is interesting though and is worth exploring to really see what he says makes sense. Meanwhile it was noticeable that Dr Wayne West the head of the JCHS made an appearance on Love 101FM's Moment of Hope show on Sunday morning last talking about HIV/AIDS and prevalence rates in teens while carefully staying clear of the Phonebook issue. Even his responses to the questions asked were markedly different as the usual combative style was not there.

Has something happened since this phonebook fiasco behind the scenes hence a change of strategy and Chisholm's public difference to the matter? a response most strange to me.

Yet to be seen if ever but duly noted.

now here is the letter in question:

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I just read Peter Espeut's article titled 'Sexual identity, gender identity' (The Gleaner, June 17, 2016) and, as a sociologist myself, wanted to edify him a bit. His views do not reflect the understanding of sex and gender among mainstream sociologists in any way, shape or form.

No half-decent sociologist believes that people are born 'male' or 'female' because of their chromosomes. That would equate (fe)maleness with a chromosome or sexual organ. I know that Espeut is a male, and I have never tested his chromosomes or seen his organs! It should be obvious from just that fact that 'maleness' is not based on those factors, but describes a series of social characteristics that we have been socialised to identify (shorter hair, more toned, less shapely, voice, etc., and, most of all, dress code!). I strongly encourage Espeut to read an article called 'Doing Gender' by West and Zimmerman.
Nonsense Argument

His argument that socialisation fails when a person who is supposedly born male identifies as a female is also nonsense to sociologists. We don't see people as failures because they do not fit into our traditional norms. A person who is a Christian in Iran is not a failure because he is in a small, rejected minority. Espeut should read Foucault's 'A History of Sexuality'.

Finally, the idea that this kind of 'post-modern subjectivism' is also wrong. Gender and sexual fluidity have been part of many cultures over history. Native Americans, for instance, recognised more than two genders. Here, 'How To Be Gay' by Halperin is a good book (it's not a manual on how to become gay, but a study of the history of gay culture).

Espeut is a homophobe. I've read enough of his stuff to know that. Rather than owning it, he's dressing up his religious intolerance in pseudo-scientific discourse. Not only are his views judgemental and reactionary to an oppressed group of people, they are also very wrong.

As I had pointed out in a previous post, In my own journey I do believe that one can be homosexual and Christian; I do not believe that God is caught up in judging us harshly by mere sexual orientation; after all we are more than just who we have sex with or are attracted to. I ask every now and again I refer to the woman with the alabaster box story or the stoning incident where I just quoted above the line Jesus used in terms of who is more holy than others. The raising of homosexuality as the worse sin above all others then the twinning if not combining of atheism/secularism as expressed by some LGBT persons as a false dichotomy to some anti-Christian, anti God position are simply just that, false dichotomies.

Drop the charade of religiosity in anti-homosexual debate (Observer Letter)

In a sense I have to agree with this letter writer as the Bible has been misused for so many things and a few crack pots just turn what should be an ongoing discourse into a paranoid driven shouting match. Especially owing to the fact that Jesus did speak to homosexuality in the new testament in Luke where Jesus in a teaching on the rapture makes what appears to be a neutral non-discriminatory reference where it read (King James Version):

I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.

Now to the letter in question:

Dear Editor,

The debate about homosexuality has been heating up over the past decade, and many who are in opposition cite scripture and refer to the description of Jamaica as a Christian society as the root of their opposition.

That, for me, is laughable because it simply is misrepresenting the truth. It is true that the good book comes down harshly on buggery, and it is also true that our laws have some grounding in Judaeo-Christian values, but we routinely cherry-pick which laws to follow.

We allow common law marriage, which is just a fancy way of two people shacking up, and nobody complains on biblical grounds. We entitle bastard children to equal rights and all is mum when it comes to biblical complaints. We even go so far as to allow women to have seniority (not to be confused with ‘activity’) in the church and the majority of biblical scholars applaud.

Now, some do complain about all these issues and really preach that fourth-century lifestyle. But the majority don’t; they move with the times, adjust, and reinterpret scripture as it suits them.

I would have more time for the anti-gay lobby if those in opposition dropped the charade of religiosity and called a spade a spade. They don’t like homosexuality because it disgusts them, and that frankly, is a reasonable position to have. They don’t accept homosexuality because it is weird and different and a ‘foreign’ culture.

All of the above are reasonable positions to hold, and one that I’m sure no gay lobbyists would hold over people’s heads. But to ground your opposition in a book written 2,000 years ago, when much of the book isn’t followed as is, does a serious disservice to the church — an institution which, love it or hate it, has always had reasoned thought behind its decisions.

In Jamaica the religion-based argument usually wins, for the church has the voice both socially and politically, and it knows how to use it. But it must get over the habit of grounding personal dislike and dissatisfaction in scripture because quite frankly it looks petty, reeks of hypocrisy, and shames the institution that used to use reason and not the bully pulpit to bring forth its arguments.

Let me end here for now but I did this post just to show the madness coming from ignorant folks who in an information age refuse to accept the reality. If I may use the JCHS’s own biblical quote they end their newsletters with:

“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.” Isaiah 9: 2 KJV

Bearing in mind King James in whose name the most popular English translation of the Bible is in was actually bisexual; pity the goody King would not have foreseen the work put in would be used as a destructive weapon hundreds of years later.

although the Catholics have a lot to answer for in terms of clerical abuse (more anon) but the message is clear thus far.

No Healthy Society Without Equality ..........

The following appeared in the Gleaner today, for the most part I am in agreement but my concerns are in red in the piece.

The visit of Randy Berry, special envoy for the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons in the US State Department, and Todd Larson, senior coordinator for LGBT affairs in the US Agency for International Development (USAID), has sparked opposition and demonstration by the Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society (JCHS) and the Love March Movement (LMM).

The action and attendant alarm raised by the respective Christian groups would be deemed irrational, and plainly ridiculous, because of the lamentable prominence which it places on the retention of the buggery law, in promoting a 'healthy' society.

There is no doubt that the retention of the buggery law, which seeks to criminalise gays and men who have sex with men (MSM), with up to 10 years imprisonment, who engage in consensual sex, in the privacy of their bedrooms, creates the space for oppression, indignity and inequality of LGBT persons, and that it gives licence to individuals of the anti-gay demographic to perpetrate violence and other criminal behaviours against these vulnerable persons.

Objective individuals are yet to ascertain, from all the lobbying and the arguments made for the retention of the buggery law, how the phenomenon of oppression, indignity and inequality, which are the three main factors affecting the lives of LGBTs, would be eliminated.

There has been repeated calls, including from the Opposition Leader Andrew Holness, for the review of the buggery law to be put to a referendum. In fact, Holness has a penchant for calling for a referendum on matters of national importance, which require sensible, objective, and careful legal input and determinations - the decriminalisation of ganja; and whether to make the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) the final appellate court for Jamaica.

Referenda on buggery will only seek to assist the sitting party in power to strengthen their base and capital and they might find themselves winning several elections for the next decades to come as they will be remembered for blocking 'battyman' hence the footballing of the issue, the PNP is also aware of this and hence they delay tactic as hinted in my previous post, they too know and are cognisant of the threat made by the JCHS etc of voting any party out that touches the buggery law and so since winning elections is the name of the game no politician in our climate presently is really going to do the right thing out of fear of being sent to the wilderness.

It escapes me, as well as several judicious luminaries whom I have been in dialogue with, how matters of such significance, which affects the rights of persons, particularly in a vulnerable space, could be put to a referendum for the electorate to decide on, when many ordinary persons in the electorate can barely, if ever, make simple, common-sense decisions when faced with conflicts and daily challenges of their own.

Referenda are also used as testing instruments to measure the ground support and are usually highly politicised in nature with parties holding hardened positions, namely the CCJ bill debate presently.

The current administration has rejected calls by the Opposition for a referendum on the decriminalisation of ganja and the CCJ matter. We would hope that common sense would prevail in the minds of said administration that the buggery law, like any other law on the books, must be canvassed in Parliament, by the legislators, and that objective reasoning and actions must be the order of the day.

The buggery law cannot be enforced against consenting adults who engage in anal sex in the privacy of their bedrooms. 

On the contrary how the law is enforced even in private (disturbingly without a search warrant in previous instances) the police as has happened before after being summoned can enter the threshold of your property and arrest persons so accused by neighbours or a call to 911 about 'suspicious' activity, the trick is to prove it on their part via a doctors' examination/report as outlined in my previous post and the associated mishaps that can occur. The police may not have been doing so in recent times but no real policy or change in the related acts has brought change to same.

I can personally speak to having the book thrown at my albeit we (myself & three other co-accused) were in a public space with no anal sex happening yet we were slapped with a buggery charge just because we were said to be found in a 'compromising position' and although the doctors' report suggested otherwise we had to languish fighting the matter for three years in our creaking and sluggish resident magistrate court system to clear our name, thankfully we had a smart judge (one of four who heard the matter) rule a sine die adjournment (could have been called up in 7 years if the arresting officer found new evidence) that was 18 years ago.

There are also reports of an increasing number of heterosexuals who engage in anal sex, consensually, in their private spaces. How could the buggery law be relevant and enforced in such circumstances, without breaching the fundamental rights of citizens?

There still would be need for some type of change with regards to buggery as non consensual acts or rape has to be covered among adults as outlined in a late in the day advocacy shift by JFLAG for example:

Since oppression, indignity and inequality are like a cancer, then there can be no 'healthy' society, as advocated for by these two Christian groups, unless it is eliminated, and the persons respected, regardless of their sexual orientation. Let us use logic, and leave emotions out, when dealing with matters of significance and law.

Healthy coalition nonsense! indeed

In light of the upsurge of the hysteria and uninformed commentary from certain anti gay voices mostly said to be Christians but most fundamentalist, the attempt to protest Obama's visit that fizzled, see more on that HERE I have to agree in most part to this letter that appeared in the Observer April 9th as to the selectivity and deceptive cherry picking by said groups namely Jamaica CAUSE, The Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society aided and abetted by the Lawyers' Christian Fellowship the veterans in the field stoking fear-mongering and falsehoods in the name of religion and by extension God I might add.

Problem is they make the rest of the church look bad hence persons just blast the church collectively.

Blog posts by chief cook and bottle washer Dr Wayne West supposedly in the name of morality and God centered beliefs are disturbing to say the least and reflects the kid of mind we are dealing with here: PM rejects moral nihilism and sexual anarchy : No to LGBTTTIQ….PZism ! No to fisting, felching, farming, scat, chariot racing etc ! as if to suggest demand law change willl also allow more far out practices than just anal sex but it also shows his ignorance on sexual orientation, a challenge the lobby has nationally as well as fear also causes our education systems over many years to address sex and sexuality. Remember the HFLE fiasco anyone?

First the letter then my follow up two cents:

Dear Editor,

After reading comments by the Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society (JCHS) all over the media, I am forced to respond to what is obviously mass propaganda and hysteria. We never hear of this group when gruesome child abuse cases are reported, but mention the word 'gay' and everyone jumps. Who are they to attempt to define the rights of any human being based on their sexuality?

These people like to rebuke the suggestion that Jamaica is indeed homophobic and they commend PM Simpson Miller for her defiant response to gay activists who heckled and interrupted her recent speech in New York on what is still a very serious issue.

JCHS suggests that gays tell lies on Jamaica and attempts to embarrass the PM who said, "No one ever hears the Government of Jamaica beating up gays". This was a simplistic response, if not absurd. What should be said is that the Government has not done enough to denounce gay discrimination and related hate crimes, they are silent on these issues and refuse to proceed with the promise made to review the antiquated buggery law which criminalises gay acts between consenting adults. This law feeds into a culture of hate and prejudice which is mostly perpetuated by the uneducated and uninformed.

If Jamaica is not homophobic, as some suggest, why did former PM Bruce Golding tell the BBC that gays cannot serve in his Cabinet? And why did Opposition Leader Andrew Holness avoid answering the question during the last electoral debate? Have they forgotten about the cross-dressing teen, Dwayne Jones, who was viciously murdered by a mob? J-FLAG reports hundreds of incidents in recent years. We also see and hear of incidents reported on the news. Isn't this homophobia? A government must be custodian for its citizens and cannot turn a blind eye to discrimination. Any government that creates, endorses and enforces laws which criminalise gay acts between consenting adults in privacy is not serious about defending human rights. This is not an issue to be put to the people, it's an issue to teach the people.

So, yes, Obama is very likely to raise human rights concerns with PM Simpson Miller, as he does everywhere he goes. She promised to review the buggery laws. No other PM to my knowledge has ever done this. Yes, we agree some progress has been made, but if the PM now believes Jamaica is no longer homophobic and that gays are spreading lies, I urge her not to delay any further the buggery law review which she promised years ago. And she can still do so defiantly with "the blood of Nanny of the Maroons and the spirit of Marcus Mosiah Garvey", as both were great heroes who fought defiantly to defend human rights.

Problem is though the letter writer misses the boat when it comes to who is actually liable for buggery when proven as the perpetrator or penetrator is the one who is charged whether he penetrated anally (gay sex or not) or with a device (also maybe reduced to grievous sexual assault or gross indecency) not the passive partner or the recipient of such penile entry (although both are tested by a doctor on behalf of the arresting officer(s) or the state.

Let me remind persons of the dancehall DJ Zebra's case for example where he raped a female and also buggered her because the matter was tried at the home circuit court he got the full brunt of the sentences rape and buggery (in the RM the accused when found guilty can get up to ten years) see: DJ Zebra gets 30 years for rape

Problem is that the twinning of atheism, secularism with law change for decriminalization and or repeal of old laws such as buggery has clouded the aims of the struggle originally and as all kinds of unqualified and inexperienced self appointed advocates come forth not understanding strategy and too headstrong those costly errors have derailed and indeed paralysed some of the incremental gains.

I Bet Deafening Silence from Religious Anti Gay Voices ...... Preacher served summons during service for alleged fraud

So like many other reports before where pastors find themselves in questionable charges coupled with grave societal ills will not get any public comment from the likes of Jamaica CAUSE, Lawyers' Christian Fellowship and Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society (the latter's leader on radio claimed homosexuality is not normal recently). A series of serious allegations against men of the cloth have been coming to light with everything from sexual abuse to fraud as this latest charge shows:

Preacher served summons during service

The weekly Wednesday service at a church in Spanish Town, St Catherine, was recently disrupted when a bailiff stepped in and slapped a senior clergy member with a summons.

The service had been going on for several hours on April 8, when about 1:30 p.m. the bailiff entered with a summons for the female preacher.

According to a source, the clergy member had been collecting the day's offering when the bailiff appeared.

It is said that when the bailiff at first attempted to serve the summons, he was greeted with resistance. There was said to be an argument between both parties before the preacher eventually took the document.

The summons, the source said, was served on the preacher after an issue developed between her and an ex-member of the church about money in a partner scheme.

When THE STAR spoke with the ex-member she stated that she had no choice but to seek the legal redress.

"Yes, I was a member of the church in 2013, and was throwing partner of $1,000 weekly. I stopped throwing and demanded back my money and still can't get it," the disgruntled ex-member said.

She said that it was as a result of being unable to collect back her $22,000 that she sought the assistance of the bailiff.

THE STAR was able to see the documents for the matter which confirmed that the case will appear in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court (Civil Division) on May 16.

The selectivity on issues is glaring by the aforementioned groups and previous entries on this blog have brought to bear alongside podcast to similar effect. One wonders why some persons join the church if only to hide under the guise of trust while exploiting all kinds of avenues for gain. They give a bad name to leaders who are really genuine yet fanatics remain mum.

The church now claims what has happened in other countries where supposed religious voices are legally persecuted for either opposing or speaking out on homosexuality will eventually lead to their speech labelled as hate speech. Recent court cases in the UK have been sited as benchmarks for this so called inevitable abuse of Christians. Case in point: Espeut, West says “Homophobia” was invented to abuse Christians as hate speech sometimes I wonder if persons do not speak their own doom into reality, what a lovely way to give the very secular and supposed anti-Christ all the ammunition they need?

One more misguided pastor

THE EDITOR, Sir:

In his column 'Jesus, Obama and gays', published in The Gleaner of April 14, 2015, the fact that Pastor Smallwood deliberately omitted one of the most significant portions of the St John 8 passage he quoted speaks volumes to his real motive.

For those who have an interest in promoting truth, here is what the passage says: "When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, if any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her. Again he stooped down to write on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away, one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus alone was left with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, woman where are they? Has no one condemned you? No, sir, she said.

Then neither do I condemn you, Jesus declared. GO AND LEAVE YOUR LIFE OF SIN" (John 8:7-11).

The pastor's omission of the latter part of the dialogue between Jesus and the woman is deliberate because he knows that if he had included it, his purpose would have been completely demolished.

It is the belief of all true Bible students that the death and resurrection of Christ have made available to all men the ability to overcome every sinful habit. Indeed, that is why he died.

It is truly heart-rending to see someone who calls himself/herself a pastor joining ranks with those who have vowed to perpetuate the lie that those who oppose homosexuality are promoting hate and intolerance.

Is it possible for these gay apologists to understand that those of us who serve Christ with a pure heart understand very well that if we do not love all men with the same fervency and understanding that we display in our opposition to homosexuality, we would be 'serving' Christ in vain?
