Gay standoff in Spanish Town’s LOJ Shopping Plaza car park

So our friend ‘Ninja’ the son of the veteran dancehall DJ Ninjaman has made the trending numbers again after several video clips taken by smartphone users earlier in the afternoon. The thing got so out of control that the security guard as the video shows had to intervene while in my estimation got too physical with Ninja as he vented. Other smartphone videographers were busy taking shots and a crowd had gathered at the exit/entrance of the plaza’s car park. The sequence of events that led to the melee is unclear but the word is that Ninja while barefooted was effectively profiled as gay given his aesthetic from his bleached skin and hairstyle. His androgynous appearance has landed him in problems before elsewhere.

His temper is entirely another matter altogether.

Sad though that his notoriety is once again enhanced by this ugly episode, one would expect that after one gets to a certain age that one simply just aim a little lower in terms of ignoring terse or harmful words and let things slide, Ninja is not known however to be one with restraint or patience when he feels that someone has stepped on his toes. He is going to explode whether one likes it or not, this is not limited to just non-LGBT people; even in the community he is known for such outbursts aka ‘judgements’ complete with the dramatics.

He was also supposedly labelled I had gathered inside the plaza as a scammer by members of the public, a stereotype that has come to be stuck on some persons by just how they look in terms of tattoos, and dresscode. Ninja is not going take that kind of bashing that kindly but the thing eventually cooled after some time but things like this tend to have an indirect effect in the credibility or image department pursuant to LGBT rights as those who effect the wall of dismissals on ‘gay rights’ when things as this one occur feel justified in their hardened positions.

Fortunately the mob or crowd at the entrance did not attack him as one would expected in times passed, one can remember another mobbing case outside of this ninja matter where cops had to rescue a gay man on Mountain View Avenue as a crowd descended on a house at the time to exact their version of how gays should be dealt with, here is that clip:

It was only in 2016 Ninja found himself in some challenges as well during a People’s National Party, PNP election campaign motorcade which drew some negative reactions from the public and even his own father for want of a better term ‘disassociated’ himself from his son while claiming he (father) did not have any issue with gays. Ninja senior said at the time that he did not curse his son but he (the son) cursed himself. He claimed that his son cannot call him and then he claimed his son he doesn’t know. Sad that for popularity Ninjaman decided to openly pretend he was not interested in his own and it is not an unusual response by many lesser celebrated persons who disown their own LGBT siblings so as to please onlookers and whisperers who expect gays are to be treated as others.

Family rejection often lead to forced evictions or estrangement if not displacement, one can also feel almost a stranger inside ones own home as other siblings simply do not engaged or are very distant. Others such as a 2004 incident at a prominent high school occurred, where a father incited violence on his own soon by other students; if it were not for the janitorial staff that intervened while sustaining some blows from persons and a chair that was thrown at the boy. The thing did not end up with a worse consequence thankfully and it left the country at the time baffled in some sense. Others agreed with the man’s actions while other persons condemned the action while the sexual orientation of his son was gone. Family bond was scene to be more stronger a reason for tolerance than just who he may be sexually interested in or sound like as it was said at the time the young man was well spoken; a trait that can land males in the target of gay allegations devoid of the gangsta or ‘badman’ traits buffered with bravado.

St Thomas Man Relocates Successfully

A St Thomas man in his forties and a labourer who had found himself in some difficulty some time in late 2016 with some problematic community members just outside of Morant Bay. The impacted man in question reached out to other friends overseas and then was routed to me and others locally via social media in early part of December; by that time things were out of control in a sense according to his account of the situation. 

Relations were getting tense not with the immediate neighbour but in fact from several houses down the cul-de-sac where he lives, the man only found out about the rumours being circulated about him from a woman who has a community shop when he went there to purchase some items and she opened up to him while asking him to be cool or at best careful given the things she was hearing; in other words the village lawyer of the area in a sense.

Thankfully the man took her advice hesitantly but was not sure if it was real what she was saying or just mischief making pursuant to a trap given how ‘country people’ can be sometimes. Living alone can be a challenge for a man speaking from personal experience in certain lower socio-economic classed communities back in the day but apparently just existence is still a problem so the whispers the man was subsequently able to ascertain was that he had ‘no woman’ a trait unfortunately that determines manhood is the multi-partnering with women as objects of display with the proverbial string of ‘yutes’ aka children as proof of virility. 

The man did not meet the pre-requisite as is and then he does not really socialise with the rest of the male populations nearby and by that I mean no marijuana smoking (rubbing hand middle), no attending of the local street dances or local events, he does not go to the local church to suggest living alone means he is Christian and so on so he became a standout as time progressed and seen to be ‘different’ from everyone else seeing how tight knit such areas can be.

In late November there was a verbal spat with one man in question who was open enough to challenge the man after he made a request for “a coin” which is the term used to ask for small change; it was to have purchased marijuana but the man’s answer claiming he had no money did not go down well with the beggar and in turn the beggar decided to launch a type of slow and sustained character assassination by way of snide remarks made whenever he sees him while referencing such terms as ‘fish’ (homophobic colloquial for gay man) and almost encouraging others to question his sexuality at one point. That information strangely came by way of the shop keeper (village lawyer) who when he visited her shop dished the latest she could glean from the streets to him; it seems according to the man was that she liked him not intimately but as a customer it seems seeing he visits the shop frequently. The impacted men became somewhat nervous according to his report and was already looking to relocate before the faithful morning of Sunday December 3, 2016.

The man came out of his home to throw away some items only to be heckled by other men who were hanging out by the end of the street by a light post. The same beggar character was literally pointing out the man to other men and by the look on their faces he knew it was not pleasant things being said. That same day but much later the man had gone to the community shop to do business only to be told by the friendly village lawyer the contents of the conversation of the men by the corner. 

They had apparently moved from the light post to the shop and were talking about the man. An implied threat of sorts was among the subject matter discussed as the group of men in the usual bravado acting attitude were hinting that they wanted no ‘battyman’ in their ‘place’ suggesting they have some ownership and license to decide who stays or goes or does as they think should happen.

The man increased his house rental seeking efforts just to avoid anymore challenges and thankfully it did not escalate to the physical as we know all too well the challenges that come with that. He was able to get a small place in Kingston for starters until otherwise successful afterwards. The man wanted to share his story in a bid to forewarn others as he had never experienced homophobia so earthy overall but more so in a rural area.

Rural areas tend to be a little behind the times usually by default as life is a little slower than in urban spaces, the lack of exposure to certain things can lead to issues when they finally present themselves I surmise. Thanks to the man for sharing his experience with this blog and this one turned out OK as opposed to others. Despite the heightened visibility of LGBT persons be they Jamaican or overseas and the influence of social media one would have expected some better sensibilities but as more and more cases as this comes through it shows there is a lot of work to be done in at best changing hearts and minds.

3 cops held for alleged shake down of three men ...............

Three Constables Charged For Breaching the CPA Three Police Constables of the Hanover Division who were arrested last week by detectives from MOCA West, were subsequently charged for breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act, according to MOCA.

They are Shemroy Hewitt, Andre Drummond and Conrod Clarke; all stationed at the Hanover Police Headquarters. Allegations are that on Tuesday January 3, 2017, the driver of a Toyota Corolla was travelling along a main road in Hanover when he was stopped by a team of policemen. The occupants were then ordered out of the vehicle and during a search, documents relating to lottery scamming activities were found. 

The three policemen then solicited and later accepted the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars ($150,000.00) from the driver, who subsequently reported the matter to detectives from MOCA West. Following interview sessions and an identification parade, charges were laid against the Constables. 

They were placed before the Hanover Parish Court on Monday, January 16, 2017 where they were each offered bail in the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Dollars ($500,000.00) with sureties. 

A Stop Order was also placed on them and they are scheduled to return to court on Wednesday, February 28, 2017. The alleged scammers who said to have paraphernalia of contacts overseas and lead lists were not arrested even after the sting operation was set up and the cops nabbed. This suggests that the allegations by the cops was false it seems as their wrong is now being exposed.

They are to return to court on February 28 after being granted bail in the Hanover Parish Court. They were each offered bail in the sum of $500,000 with sureties when they appeared before the court.

The last time there was a similar case carried on this blog was: 

Cops freed of corruption charges shakedown of gay men in 2015. That case ended due to want of prosecution as the two men who made the report did not follow up for the preliminary hearing and court mention dates, even after reporting to MOCA and having them extend state resources pursuant to a successful sting operation.

Man says gay rumours need to stop, Bishop in car accident not his boyfriend

Since the tragic passing of Bishop Steven Ricketts, who died when his car plunged into the Rio Cobre River on Saturday, an old video footage has resurfaced of him allegedly beating his lover.

However, the young man in the video, 20-year-old Devon Fray, also known as Chris, of Commodore, St Catherine, has come forward to clear the air, saying he is not gay, and that the video footage has been misconstrued by a misleading caption.

"I just need people to get this thing straight. I want people to understand what really happen," Fray told THE STAR, noting that the controversy has been wreaking havoc in his family.

The 33-second-long clip at the centre of the controversy was initially posted online in 2014. It shows the bishop wielding a machete while grabbing a young Fray and enquiring about three hickeys on his neck.

"Who give you dem hickey deh? Talk fast before me give you three outta this!,"the bishop said.

The video made the rounds on social media when it was initially posted two years ago, but it recently resurfaced since the Bishop's passing and has been causing quite a stir since.

Fray told THE STAR that at the time the video was created, the Bishop was "running a joke" with him.

" Earlier in the day, I was just meeting this girl by me church and we usually talk and thing. She gave me three hickeys," Fray said.

"When me go by his [the bishop] house now he was drinking. He wasn't serious. He was just joking and asking me where me get hickey from, and saying, 'talk fast!' So I started laughing and saying you see hickey pon me neck?," Fray explained.

He added, "Even after that video, he [the Bishop] was laughing and saying, 'you nuh easy enuh, you make church woman hold you down and give you hickey'."

Fray said he was shocked when he later saw the video online with the misleading caption.

"Me neva have a problem with people putting out the video, but it's what dem have a write up under the video, saying pastor a beat him boyfriend. Mi and him never have sex yet or any of them behaviours deh," Fray said.

He told THE STAR that the controversy surrounding the video has taken a toll on his life and that of his family members, so he wants to clear the air and move on.

"People was sending pure threats to me. All some young bwoy a say them wah kill me. My mother trouble with pressure and it a stress her out. She nuh know wah fi do," Fray lamented.

Fray added that he is in a committed relationship with a female, who was pregnant with his first child, but unfortunately lost the baby recently.

"Mi no really want all a dem things yah [gay rumours] a distract me life," Fray said.

But Fray had nothing bad to say about Ricketts who he said was a father figure to him. He stressed that the bishop never made any sexual advances towards him

"He is nice and kind and so forth. He has done a lot for me. We would sit and eat, and drink, and reason. I'm so sad about his death, but all now me nuh cry because of this whole video thing," Fray said.

So a woman wrote to a tabloid to say she left a man she met because he is gay but she as many others attribute the stereotypical effeminacy as a marker in her engagement with the man

she claimed:

I have nothing against gay people. I say, to each his own. I pride myself on having a very good 'gaydar', meaning I'm very good at telling if someone, especially a guy, is gay. As them talk or make certain movements, I know not to look in their direction for a relationship.

It look like my 'gaydar' wasn't working when my friends introduced me to this guy at a party. He was very good-looking, he dressed nice, smelled good and was a great dancer.

When he asked me out later that week, I didn't hesitate one bit. From the first time me meet him, me notice him have a very high pitched laugh, almost like a girl, but me neva think too hard about it, because nuff people laugh funny, including me, so me neva judge him.

Things did a gwaan good fi a while but me notice him always a spend 'quality' time with him best friend, who happens to be a guy.

Nuff nights me call him and him tell me say him a sleep by him best-friend house.

Mi did feel a way about it, but me neva look too deep into it, at least, it wasn't another girl.

Ova time, a lot of things did start happen wah cause me fi start question his straightness, but what put the icing on the cake was one evening I asked him to follow me to a party, and he told me he can't come that day because it's his best friend's birthday, and he always takes him out to dinner. What kind of man takes another man out to a fancy restaurant for dinner?

From him say that, the signal pon me gaydar nearly pop off, if you get wah me mean! Mi just say, "ok", and, from that day, I cut him off.

I see him engaged to a woman now, but me sorry fi she, because she deh wid a gay man.

But seriously isn't this another clear example of how our school system is not preparing folks on sexuality and orientation issues, the man despite being effeminate in her eyes could also be bisexual, who knows? But to simply to arrive at a gay conclusion just because of effeminacy is just plain stupid and ignorant.

Someone needs to tell this woman sexual orientation is bigger than stereotypical attitudes used as profiling to seek out person's perceived choices, practices and liking. 

No contact was left in the article to reach her as I think an intervention is so needed in the matter.

But thanks to people like Reverend Ronnie Thwaites and previous education minister(try) officials we are stuck in backwardness, as evidenced in the HFLE matter some years ago and a refusal to face facts by not distributing condoms in school with a moral panic offensive.

Woman stabbed for gay rumours .....

Rumours of him being labelled a homosexual is what a man says got him into trouble with the law.

Oshando Hylton pleaded not guilty to unlawful wounding when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The accused told the court that the complainant had been spreading rumours in his community about his sexuality.

Hylton denied assaulting the complainant, who is his cousin-in-law, but admitted that he confronted her about the alleged rumours.

The complainant told the court that Hylton had accosted her, and shoved her to the ground where he proceeded to stab her with the screwdriver.

The accused told the court that he had only taken the screwdriver out of his pocket during their confrontation, but claimed that the complainant was lying about him using it.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey ordered for the medical report of the complainant's injuries to be presented to her when the case returns to court on March 10.

Oh boy another case of he said she said land someone else in trouble; sometimes one has to walk it out and leave bitches alone, simply put yah man. Of course Pusey has decades of experience in this and similar cases so let us see if she will decipher the real truth behind it all.

It is a bit troubling to me with so many cases of young persons getting to altercations with others on the slightest gay rumour, profiling or suppositions.

Wig-wearing comedians fear gay label .... oh boi

I found this one hard to believe when I read it the first time around and then again; my memory chipped in and then I realize some of these younger comedians as it were are either unaware of the journey of their predecessors or just plain dumb and out of touch with their audiences and culture. Mi did think seh some folks bigger than that but boi am I wrong.

Jamaican roots plays in particular and indeed stand-up comedy has built their reputations and attraction from intermittent effeminacy or effeminate male characterization for decades despite our homophobic attitudes but such characterizations are digestible from the stage. Remember the old names.

Several male Jamaican comedians have found fame on social media by sometimes playing the role of females in dresses and wigs, but some persons are disgruntled with the idea and are labelling the males as homosexuals. A Facebook post captured the general sentiments of those opposed to males playing female roles in their comedic skits.

"What's up with all these Jamaican comedians dressing and acting like women complete with wigs and all? My comment is unreserved. If you dress and act like women to be funny then we have no choice, but to see you as being 'funny'. We get the message, now stop acting," the post said.

But Dutty Berry explained that he plays female roles in his videos because a female is not always readily available to participate, and may not be able to depict the role as humorously as he could. The comedian conceded that he was initially hesitant to act as a female, however, after experimenting with the role once, he has found that people gravitate to it more than his other content.

"I find that females form a large part of my fan base and they love my content. Your job as a comedian is to entertain so you have to give the people what they want," said Dutty Berry said, who has a recent video in which he is seen wearing a red wig playing a 'matey', who is "putting wifey in her place".

Another male comedian who often plays female roles is Dale Elliott, popularly known as Elli the Viner. He usually wears a green towel wrapped around his head to depict a female character. He noted that he is cognisant of the notion that males who play female characters are often referred to as being gay which is why he treads carefully when he attempts to take on a female role.

"I know how Jamaicans are, so I don't go all out and wear wigs. I only wear the towel on my head, but my tone and masculine demeanour doesn't change because I don't want people to label me as gay," Ellie the Viner said.

"Don't judge a book by it's cover. People are sometimes harsh with their criticism, but they should remember that at the end of the day, it's just acting."

Meanwhile, Kvonne Legore, popularly known as Prince Pine, sometimes plays the role females but uses unconventional props to depict the characters

"I try wig one time and me neva like it. I try to use anything except wig on my head. I use shoes box, shirt, towel and even me brief. I don't want people to wonder about my sexuality so I stay far from the wig controversy," Prince Pine said. However, he added, "It's all for entertainment. It's been around for a long time and not just in Jamaica, so I don't see why Jamaicans have to bash it."

So what if people suspect one is gay? once you put yourself out there there is bound to be criticisms and perceptions formed of you. The photos above says alot so if I were him just expect the perceptions. Dutty Berry has built his name on a semi effeminate presentation in voice especially yet expect us to accept this stance on not wearing props or playing roles of effeminate men or women roles! Sadly we are not a nation overall that respects and recall or repeat our histories it is seen or treated as discarded knowledge so I am not surprised at this latest foolishness, as the English or others do they pride their histories, as in the introduction it is the very effeminacy that has come to define roots plays with a number of characters over the years coming to prominence.

Nearly every actor who is somebody has done some characterization embodying effeminacy and the props to go with it and life goes on, frankly one aint no actor if you are afraid of playing a role and separating oneself from perceived notions of ones sexuality or orientation. Plays such as

So a word to Dutty Berry et al you aint worth the salt if you are afraid of labels because you played or dressed an effeminate or woman part. I am sorry for us creatively if this is the thinking that continues; I hope some maturity will come down the line.

Gay man saved from mob by cop

Oh boy it never fails, it never fails as one more of our brethren feels the pinch but this time another police man saves the day and thankfully so, this business of profiling though is still an issue for gender non conforming persons especially younger and poorer fellas.

An openly gay man was rescued by police after an angry mob cornered him inside a bank parking lot in Half Way Tree on Tuesday.

Loop News arrived on the scene just in time to see police keeping the crowd at bay. The man, who said his name is "Sky", told Loop News that he was walking with three friends when the mob descended on them and they ran in different directions.

Sky said he ran into the popular bank's parking lot. A policeman arrived quicky on the scene and called for assistance. Not long after that, a team of cops descended on the location and drove Sky to safety.

"Is a good thing I used to play dandy shandy; that's why I could have sight the stones," Sky said.

"I am gay and they wanted to beat me because I am gay. But I am comfortable with who I am," added the man, who taunted the crowd by showing them his buttocks before entering the police vehicle.

Jamaica has a reputation for being intolerant of the gay lifestyle (Loop should have said homosexuality and stop confusing effeminacy with sexual orientation)

Members of the crowd were unsympathetic towards the man.

"Ah lucky him lucky, you saved his life," a dreadlocked man told the cop who had arrived first on the scene.

Added another man: "They should have let him out and give him to us."

Ironically, some members of the crowd praised the policeman for his efforts, some folks are getting sensible and are realizing that it makes no sense to attack persons simply because they are different than you.

Something seems missing from this episode as what was the actual trigger point leading to the attack was not clear in the report on Loop or elsewhere.

Teen forced to change schools following outing incident

A seventeen year old male student formerly of a Kingston school has been relocated to another institution since late last year as a matter arising out of an impromptu situation involving a male teacher who he had a crush on at the previous school. As boys are taught not to be emotional or affectionate towards male adults the student said he struggled with the attraction towards the teacher for months and although he also saw him as a mentor he was also aroused many times. 

Often times we see stories in the tabloids about inappropriate teacher student relationships and we are led to believe that it was the teachers’ fault in approaching the student, maybe it is so but each case MUST be taken on their own merit and when such “confusion” as some experts call it happen where does a boy who is same sex attracted go to for advice and guidance how to process those feelings? I too experiences a similar attraction to a male teacher back then while in high school and was infatuated with his voice and physique as he was the physical education instructor but had to suppress my feelings as there were no avenues to share same and process them except for the occasional masturbation session to relief myself of said feelings.

I can fully appreciate and understand some of this and am glad that the guardian has allowed me to share the core essence of the report made to me via telephone some time ago. The issue of students in sexual encounters with other students and adults is high on the public’s mind as of late due to the plethora of sex tapes (hetero) involving students on social media and concerns raised by the parenting commission and the Ministry of Education both of whom alongside the Principal Association do not want to address homosexuality and early initiation as they ought to be dealt with and the sanitization of the HFLE, Home and Family Life Manual directs us to that realization in recent times.

The “torture” as it were in the mind of the student continued for months as each time he saw the teacher he would go “crazy” as it were and to top that his parents were not so supportive of homosexuality at all so hiding was the option to avoid any issues; there were hardly any other boy crushes that were as intense as the teacher’s pull and he (the teen) had explored non penetrative sexual contact with other boys but the admiration was intense, instances of leaning his elbows out for example to deliberately allow his legs or crotch to touch him or inane meaningless conversation just to take up the time were some of the strategies used to hone in the adult just to prolong the presence of the man before him. 

The teen even went as far as to investigate his contact details but it got no further, the teacher in the meantime though admitting long after that he is a member of the gay community does not identify as such until the sessions with the guidance counsellors and board of the school according to the report made by the teen as gay but became aware of the boy’s advances as they became intense according to the revelation made after the outing incident at the school. The teacher has since resigned (not sure if he was forced) and is gainfully employed at a private institution.

On a rainy Friday afternoon in December 2013 the teacher made his way to a classroom where he apparently left some notes by error on a desk after a session, school had just ended where the teen was passing and saw him, seizing the opportunity to have another one of those stretched conversations just to fulfil his crush he entered the room and quizzed the teacher about this and that but it became too apparent as evidenced in the erected bulge of the teen; it was at that point that the teacher confronted the student about the site and at that same moment as the teen grabbed his own crotch in a bid to hide his member’s size another student came in the classroom; both teen and teacher froze in shock as the other third person in the room looked in surprise then came the words inadvertently out of the mouth of the teen “a him mek me wood stan up” (he caused me to get an erection) afterwards it became apparent that the student who witnessed the exchange at the wrong moment interpreted the statement as the teacher fondling the student. The frightened teen ran and never returned to school until days after thinking that by then the matter who have spread all over the school, he was right as it did carry by the student who came in the room.

His parents were summoned and the matter was discussed off campus fortunately with the Vice Principal and counsellor; the latter offered prayer for change and what looked like reparative therapy suggestions for the student. Meanwhile at home things became dicey as his father has since not spoken much to him and other relatives have become distant. Thankfully an aunt has decided to take him in and address the relocation exercise where it was successful in another parish and new school. The school had not expelled him and that should be noted as we have seen before cases that may be similar where he student is relieved of their space at the school in a supposed bid to “purge” the environment of the lifestyle. I can remember a case some years ago at Dunoon Technical which was carried in a local newspaper where a father incited other students to beat his own son as his homosexual orientation was made public.

There are hardly any avenues as I hinted above for young gay teens (or other orientations and genders for that matter) to unload and process their feelings and desires and many fall through the cracks of mostly schools owned and run by Churches who are indifferent towards such matters.

Hope this teen can live it down and recover quickly and move on. Others are not so lucky and end up on the streets or worse.
