Gay, straight gang war leads to murders, May Pen mayor wants to reduce crime

According to the Star News:

Winston Maragh

A war between two rival gangs in Rocky Point, Clarendon, a division which recorded six murders last year, is said to have started over an ongoing conflict between homosexuals and straight men in the area.

Information reaching THE WEEKEND STAR is that members of the Compton and Cuban gangs have been at odds for more than three years, so much so that battle lines have been drawn in the informal settlement.

Councillor for Rocky Point and Mayor of May Pen, Winston Maragh, explained that the war started because of a murder.

"I represent the community, and over the past two years Rocky Point has had numerous murders. There are two gangs - one over on the western side and the other on the eastern side. They keep fighting and we don't know what they are fighting for," he said.

"My investigation is that it started with a gang of homosexuals against a gang of heterosexuals. You kill this one relative, then they come back and kill. Reprisal, until everybody gets involved. One of those killed was regarded a good boy, but he was the brother of a bad boy. They couldn't catch the brother, so they killed him," Maragh said.

Ghost town

The mayor also told THE WEEKEND STAR that the entire community was flooded with guns.

"The police have managed to come in and intervene, and it has now calmed down. The main players were caught and some of them killed," he said.

According to some residents and officials, the crime situation has been so bad that the area is like a ghost town after certain hours.

"The fear is still there. If I call a community meeting now, they tell me start 2 o'clock and finish by 6," Maragh said.

All hope is not lost as Maragh said he has embarked on initiatives aimed at rescuing the community.

"My community renewal programme will take care of that when fully implemented. It will be over a four-year period. It is intended to reduce crime and make life easier for everybody," he said.

Head of the Clarendon Police Division Superintendent, Gwendolyn Cameron Powell, also told THE WEEKEND STAR that she is aware of the gangs operating in Rocky Point.

"Policing Rocky Point has been an issue, however, the police have been managing the crime situation," she said.

THE WEEKEND STAR spoke with several community members who said they were aware of the two gangs. However, no one was willing to state which one of the gangs represented the gay or heterosexual side.

Stabbed for not probing deeply enough!

There is never a dull day in Jamaican and indeed gay life or aspects of it. As the holidays end and life slowly returns to normal as it were the drama, fun and bizarre stories usually come to hand as tongues go a wagging. A previous post showed us the lower socio economic spectrum of some of these sub-cultural matters of handcart lovers who had to beat a hasty retreat in downtown Kingston. A man in his thirties has been doing just that as he is still fuming as he felt he was dissed and then stabbed by the same person as a hook up went bad. Cruisers or at least the street walking/hunting ones and those who do not traverse such scenes consistently usually take the trek in holiday times as Christmas or New Year periods and by the man’s own admission as he felt “thirsty” according to a rather lengthy WhatsAPP thread where the man vented his upset quite openly. The laughter was palpable but the seriousness of the proverbial ‘changeling’ nature of some of this was not lost to us. The group is a mix of cruisers and other men who engage in gay sex with some experience.

This latest episode occurred in the eastern end of the New Kingston area on December 24 around 10pm both men came into contact with each other after picking up on each other (gaydar I imagine) and they both moved to finding a space to explore what they felt. After some negotiations according to the man on the WhatsAPP thread they settled on what was to go down between the two. Such circumstances tend to go beyond the typical as excitement sometimes can get to a sexual fever pitch and other action comes into play. It appears by the man’s own admission he wouldn’t normally do rimming with other men outside of his main partner and or if the recipient is “clean” a long exchange ensued on that diversion much to the laughter (lol and dwl) of some participants.

The men then started to ‘get busy’ and action picked up as both men liked what they saw and the other party seemed “clean” enough. As the rimming phase of the fun came into play the man admitted although he was doing the job he did not probe deeply enough (my words) or in essence penetrate the anus with his tongue by forcing himself passed the sphincter muscle opening. A typical rimming job or ‘fridge cleaning’ or ‘batty-wash’ a term made popular by dancehall artists such as Vybz Kartel and more so Alkaline(aka the rimming DJ) exercise is usually restricted to outside the anus by the opening of the sphincter muscle opening which can be just as pleasurable as actual penile of tongue penetration with the unusual high amounts of membranes at the area. The man admitted in words to the effect that the musty scent devoid of other expected scents was a kind of reassurance that the man was hygienic but no deep probing was done none the less. The man conducting the ‘cleaning of the fridge’ was busy self pleasuring but found himself the subject of demands by the standing recipient who instructed the rimmer to enter more deeply.

The rimmer hesitated for a moment but still proceeded as he was before; only to have the man attempting to forcibly pull on his head and backing up his ass in or on the man’s face. It was there that things got out of place and both men ended up in an altercation. Things cooled but the recipient wanted more or continued action while insisting deep tongue action, when the man suggested what appeared to be partnered masturbation (“shake off”) but the recipient wanted the tongue in his ass and by any means necessary. After some verbal persuasion the man still refused and decided he was leaving the scene but the man would have none of it and another round of a physical struggle ensued so much so that both men ended up on the ground struggling; the man found it funny and in what seems to be playful but rough language used terms such as “come nuh baby” and so on.

But things quickly moved to the next level as the rimmer really lost his cool, in the aforementioned thread “mi haffi fix de boi” (I have to fix the boy) and there was where the knife was drawn by the other man and the struggle went on. It resulted in a minor stab would on the right hand of the former rimmer from a ratchet knife the other man had and a banger phone that had fallen from the man to the ground was smashed under foot as they tussled. The men parted and an argument continued until the stab victim used a rag he had in his back pocket to wrap the wound and stop the bleeding. Then the unexpected came as the rimmer made his way to the main road he was outed so to speak as the exiting perpetrator pointed him out to passersby. Talk about dangerous closet queens who can be more dangerous than homophobes indeed. Both men then went their separate ways but he says he knows where the man hails which may suggest this may not be over by a long shot.

This one reminds me of an older case in the early 2000s where a similar matter occurred but it did not have the knife play element to it. There seems to be a string of newbies in town who have been noticed by older or practiced cruisers (the more adventurous ones that is); a reader who identifies as a cruiser suggested that I needed to differentiate the types of hunters as he does not do masculine spaces such as old buildings, abandoned garages or so on as I had hinted to in a previous post but he is a more plaza operative type or lavatory visitor, problem is such spaces have been rapidly disappearing in the last decade. This loss of space is also playing a role in how the population’s sex seeking behaviours play out literally. The old remaining section of the cholera cemetery for example where that now infamous emaciated HIV positive gay homeless man photo was taken is up for major development, bushing has removed the hiding/secrecy element, male commercial sex workers, homeless MSM/transgender and cruisers have all been impacted as the government and proposed developers are at odds as to the way forward alongside police patrols and local municipality clearances.

Increased police patrols generally also have had an impact of some of this which was kind of surprising to me when this matter came to hand. Post that townhall meeting with the outgoing Police Commissioner where he addressed the homeless gays in the Shoemaker Gully also had made the area off limits as the cruising community watch these things and plan their routes and hookup activities.

Happy hunting and just be vigilant and safe to include reading the man before you both get down or if it is a group even more reading is important.

Another phone thief held, forces victim at knifepoint to unlock phone

So the homelessness guys issue and other thugs outside of the Shoemaker Gully main group have come up for some accusations of robbery in the New Kingston business district; a gay man was relieved of his BLU smartphone on December 22 I was able to confirm, the man however even after releasing the phone to the robber was effectively re-assaulted after the robber realised the phone was locked not only with a password which could easily be wiped by a factory reset but APPS that offer remote protection were active. Said APPS can be activated remotely to wipe the full contents of the device and SD cards or allow the front facing camera to take a photo and send it to a designated preset email or to the manufacturer as in the case of Apple for iphones and they in turn would alert the authorities as to the stolen device.

A series of phone robberies in that area and other surrounding zones on Constant Spring Road near Popeye’s eatery, the same zone where a soldier earlier in December pulled his firearm and killed a man who tried to rob him after he left a bank of cash and his smartphone is hot again. Another man not known to be gay but hangs out with the more masculine acting types of the group allegedly; one such case was carried on this blog earlier this year as it occurred to a close friend of mine. That phone was never recovered and it never had the aforementioned activated security enablers to act as reinforcements. Complaints have been reported in traditional media of robbers demanding of their victims in the robbery to unlock the phones and disable any APPS for protection while also demanding they try no attempt to take photos secretly or else. Two men who were walking for a popular LGBT spot earlier in December towards Half Way Tree were also relieved of their phones and cash by two thugs said to be linked to the homeless MSM/transgender in the New Kingston region.

The incident was not reported to the police as the victim just counted the episode as a loss which is sad to me but it is what it is. It was earlier in the year another case involving a lesbian and gay man and another man was ended in the St Andrew parish court when the victim was relieved of his Samsung phone under the guise of being accused of stealing the very phone from the woman, she called a crowd’s attention playing a victimhood card and the other two accomplices to arrive as the saviours of the supposed damsel in distress and relieve the man of his phone with onlookers supporting the robbery disguised as a rescue. It was only when the victim profusely protested and demanded someone call the number, it was when the number was dialled the phone rang as the woman was walking away laughing. The matter was reported to the police and the suspects were held and tried. They were found guilty and fined; sadly such fines are not punitive enough in my view to deter persons from reoffending; the two were also linked to an elaborate phone stealing ring where even so called phone repair men who have informal stalls on the streets benefit from scrapping and or selling the phones after getting them wiped.

It is suspected that the ring is still in operation and gays are also being targeted as another unconfirmed reports of at least two robberies just outside the a LGBT spot where after parties persons are targeted by beggars mostly homeless and or thugs who prey on the physically weaker than they are and steal phone and cash. Montego Bay is also not immune from some of this as despite the clamp down on sex work and idlers at the infamous dump up beach stretch cruisers and others have been robbed by phone thieves as well. One case had a violent element according to an unconfirmed report in August of this year , the male victim was approached by a man who begged money but when his request was not met he went on to pull a knife and relieved the man of his Alcatel phone, he subsequently posted a status message on Facebook advising that his phone had been stolen so his number would have been down.

Tips to secure your device etc:

Use the available APPS for security and remote wiping capabilities available from reputable sources as the Google Play store or Apple

Avoid using similar APPS that claim to offer protection when they may be malware or identity stealing capable masked as protection

Activate features such as capabilities to locate your device or take a photo via a front camera if an attempt is made to open the phone

Backup all your data from the phone and SD cards and SIM cards to another location just in case

Install other features such as the ‘stay alert’ APP linked to the local police

Avoid as best as possible using your devices in certain parts of town

Avoid wearing what be considered to be expensive headsets as fashionable as they can attract thieves who may assume you have a smartphone

Pay attention to your surroundings when in public or on plazas

Avoid sending messages or browsing on the device while walking, it also has implications for safety in traffic or loss of direction

Walk with or obtain a banger phone just in case to avoid possibly robbery although such phones are also being stolen surprisingly

Plan and execute your routes when going out just in case and if needs be do not answer the device in a place where you are uncomfortable.

Plain and simple just be vigilant and be safe it is not worth your life to loose a phone because it is yours and is expensive, they can always be replaced.

December 9 sentencing for 4 year-old gay lover beheading case in St Ann

In a follow up to a case I have been tracking since 2012 of the beheading of a man in St Ann one of the accused is to be sentenced in the St Ann Home Circuit Court on December 9 after he was convicted of the murder, he is Howard Ricketts, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP says Ricketts helped his co accused Neville ‘Garnet’ Lewis murder Burnett Thomas back in March 2012 at his Brown’s Town home in St Ann the deceased was said to have had an intimate relationship with the accused. On the day of his death they had a dispute reportedly Lewis otherwise called ‘Garnet’ accused the deceased Mr Thomas of infecting him with HIV Ricketts testified that on the morning of the incident he saw Lewis use a machete to chop Mr Thomas on the left side of the neck he said then Lewis told him he had to take part in the act.

here was the TVJ report then:

Rickets said he assisted Lewis to pull Mr Thomas to the bedroom where he then inflicted stab wounds to the chest and intestinal area with a machete as well. Lewis enraged subsequently use the machete to sever the head of Thomas then placed it in a rice bag, police acting on information proceeded to the house where smoke was seen coming from one of the room windows, firemen who also arrived on the scene to extinguish the flames when they discovered the body of a naked headless man lying on his back was seen on the also partially burnt mattress. He was later identified to be Mr Burnett Thomas; the body had several stab wounds with reportedly intestines protruding.

Rickets said in an unsworn statement indicated that he stabbed the deceased approximately three times and that Lewis chopped off the head of the deceased after the incident Ricketts said he was so scared he got dressed and left for work as usual. On March 29, 2012 an eyewitness residing nearby said a foul stench was in the air and went to investigate and found the decomposing head of what appeared to be a male with flies encompassing it in close proximity to their house in Orange Hill District, Brown’s Town St Ann, the head was later identified to be that of the deceased. On April 2, 2012 the accused Howard Ricketts was charged.

When cautioned he said:

“Officer a de boi Garnet cause dis pon mi enuh, a him seh mi fi help and look wah happen”

(Officer is the boy Garnet cause this on me you know, he said I should help him now look what has happened)

On May 26, 2014 Neville ‘Garnet’ Lewis pleaded guilty to murder while his co accused was found guilty late last month.

As word of this case spreads comments continue to conflate crimes of passion beliefs versus reported homophobic driven murders all because of one case, those who supposedly oppose homosexuality of the removal of amendment of the buggery law, it was earlier this year as well we saw a matter in western Jamaica where a teacher was found dead in his house also in a decomposing state and allegations were that a lovers’ quarrel led to the gruesome find as gays are supposedly jealous to the core. One or two murders that may appear to be domestic or intimate partner violence evidence cannot and ought not to be used to justify homophobia indeed condemning the deceased as deserving of their fate; and sometimes done in the name of God bizarrely.

Older more popular murder cases that are kept alive in media given the typed of attention and skewing deliberately or not of the situations and ignorance of gay life altogether; speculation is the driver on the crisis reporting front. Older terms that used to attend was “Sodomatical attack” as an old case in the 80s, September 28 1983 the day of the murder and May 30, 1984 is one such, the judge was scathing in his summation in that case as the man who was murdered as the Chauffeur one Anthony Angus in question was freed on the basis of the usually deceptively used ‘gay panic defense’ by defense council or prosecution and that the accused was ‘entitled to kill in justification’ of the deceased Desmond Schnoor a business also in St Ann as this beheading case, Mr Schnoor’s gun was used to kill him.

Angus testified that he went to the home of Schnoor after being asked to although he may have suspected he was gay and that was the supposed outcome as the business made a move on him, the question then as is now is why did Angus go in the first place if he knew or suspected Schnoor was gay? Sad that in that particular instance what appeared to be a lie to suit the national sentiments on male homosexuality went on to free an accused man; the truth may never have been revealed, there may have been a down-low element in that matter.

Don’t get mad if your ‘TOP’ got f@cK#*

Is there anything as an exclusive ‘TOP?’ i say no as I have said in previous posts and just the human condition in terms of wants and needs also smash that concept in my view, experience teaches wisdom I suppose.

So the business of hetero-normative sexual role playing has crept into gay life once again by way of a matter close to home. The old beliefs of a hyper-masculine man is a real or more man than the rest of us with a penis has come to define the power struggles and differentials out there sometimes with awful outcomes of violence, indeed psychological torture or stress. Indeed I like many others am guilty of raising ‘Tops’ to the realms of objectification and or worship as they break the stereotypical gay mould of us being effeminate or striving for some sort of womanhood, so a thug type, trade or gangsta is a highly valued prize in the scheme of things and is often used as a trophy to show off to others in a kind of “I got a man” braggadoshiousness when sometimes some of these archetypes also want what we want; penetration that is, as they too feel they have an obligation to fulfil by way of the consummate stud and images of virility must be maintained or he may become the laughing stock on the circuit or reduced to a “bottom” suggesting he has lost his manhood or bravado sexually speaking.

Such masculine types are not expected by the rest of society on a homophobic tinged belief system to be gay; some feeling of being on the down-low is there and sometimes tolerated in some certain circles such as gangland or prison sex culture which some baby-mothers quietly accept. They look the other way especially if the man is a dominant type and maybe violent as well. Effeminacy must NOT be found anywhere a real man and is vehemently opposed when exposed.

I recently had an interaction with a young man who did not know his boyfriend was straying all along although it was known by those parties who engage him, but blind to the fact his man was out and about getting it down with others as he was not getting it at home or was not prepared to ask for certain activities and pleasures with his main partner. The naive young man was of the delusion (I picked in our exchange) thought his man was his man and that he was all man in terms of playing a top role. Little did he know that his man wanted some dick as well but maybe decided not to ask in order to avoid the feeling of failure as a functioning top or be humiliated reputational out there in the field of the grapevine and such.

I had met the guy at an event I was the DJ at earlier this year and we started an extended conversation but I was not going down the sex road at the time although he is gorgeous, what explains how certain men from the lower economic strata just have that natural look without visiting a gym is amazing to me; chiselled torso, six pack, defined muscles, legs and biceps complete with an 11 incher was too good to resist. I too despite my widening learning of sexuality labelled him in the realm of a typical top but as the conversation went he was expressing more non regular thoughts on pleasure; then it came through that he was looking for a ‘different’ experience, that of having a good dick in his ass. So I obliged in time, our closeness had not gone unnoticed and soon word got to his lover whom he the guy did not announce to me he had. We had a few good moments and it ended at least in the sex department and we kept the friendship otherwise.

To be landed with a furious voice via a phone call that I took his man and such was the last thing I expected and it lasted for some time intermittently. In a kind of ‘tek it and cuss dem’ (take the issue that may offend and attack or embarrass one) I landed him with the doing of the deed and I admit I went off on him but then again I realised he was young or sounded so and is clearly not in touch with some of the realities. He clearly did not understand the nuances of a relationship and that role play cannot or indeed should not be defined literally by how one looks in a same gender union. I have often said that we need to unlearn the hetero-normative constructs that have come to define our sexual relationship health.

I feel some of the guys who are inadvertently trapped by definition due to looks and expected virility want to be released, there comes a point when objectification and praise complete with keeping up appearances can be burdensome which is what could explain why hyper-masculine types seek more sexual exploration and nonsexual friendships with older men such as my age over forty and keep a rigid ‘top’ ‘bottom’ arrangement with younger guys as they seem unwilling to be flexible sexually, there is more to life than being seeing as a sex object for spontaneous sex. They tend to seek deeper conversations with older men as well, given my experiences thus far with those types of guys. Sex between men in an ideal setting maybe should not be restricted to who pushes the dick but it should have flexibility as boredom can set in and persons stray outside for pleasure.

Apart from sex there is the business of just cohabiting and non sexual but meaningful interaction in the relationship be it a liaison for a time or a long term union. Even in ‘open relationships’ or gay polyandrous arrangements there has to be some depth or deep connections between parties and not just a hooker call for sex and couple bucks left on the night table when it’s over.

I guess as long as we operate nationally in the highly sexualised environment we are in coupled with the impact of social media exposing us to more experiences and actualities elsewhere the adaptation or cementing of hetero-normative trends in gay arrangement won’t die off so easily. Even in same gender loving women unions we see the phenomenon play out especially with the clash between ‘butches’ versus ‘studs’ and who is considered more authentic or who is seen as confused traversing the sexual spectrum and identity or aesthetics.

The fact of the matter is people should not get mad if they’re boyfriends stray given the scheme of things these days; after all we all have a dick and ass and have feelings, desires and expectations.

Don’t get mad if your ‘TOP’ got f*****

Alleged Pastors who offer 'spiritual protection' to lotto scammers murdered

Two male members of a church, including a pastor, were shot and killed by two armed men in Montego Bay, St James last evening. The church is not a traditional church but a pocomania style outfit that also used to feature the late drag queen and party promoter turned scammer Kenrick 'Bebe' Stevenson who was brutally murdered some time ago as well in a related scamming matter allegedly.

One of the assailants was subsequently shot and injured during a subsequent shoot-out with the police.

The deceased have been identified as 27-year-old pastor, Ryan Jackson and Buckclair Smith, 23; both of Rose Heights, St James. Pastor Ryan Jackson and deacon Buckclair Smith of the First Truth International Apostolic, it is no secret the used of obeah or necromancy or vodoo is rife in the illegal activity to gain protection from enemies to avoiding or creating confusion in court cases involving scammers; this is not surprising to most.

Reports are that about 6:pm, Jackson, and Smith went to a hardware to purchase tile along Kerr Crescent in Montego Bay.

After making the purchase they both went on the road where they were pounced upon by two assailants who opened fire killing them.

The police who were in the area and heard the explosions, went to investigate and came under gunfire from the two assailants.

The fire was returned and one man was subsequently found suffering from gunshot wounds. A 9mm pistol was also discovered in the area.

The wounded gunman was taken to hospital where he was admitted in a series condition.

The unraveling taking place in Montego Bay in terms of open murders and drive by shootings has directly impacted the LGBT community and given residual perceptions from as far back as 2010 when a Superintendent labelled scammers generalizing them as lotto scammers it is very hard to divorce the groups and persons as there is some truth to it.

Mystery surrounds killing of doctor ..... suspects held

Jamaica is now one pair of gifted hands shorter in its hospitals. Dr Martin Garwood, whose job included tending to persons who suffered major trauma inflicted by gunshots, knives, machete, and motor vehicle accidents, died after being stabbed multiple times at his home.

"It is a horrible day," Mark Newnham, president of the Association of Surgeons in Jamaica, told THE STAR.

Garwood, who would have achieved full qualification to be a practising surgeon in Jamaica next year, was a member of the Kingston Public Hospital staff.

Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, head of the Corporate Communications Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, told THE STAR yesterday that investigators believed that Garwood was murdered between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., at his King's Avenue home near Barbican in St Andrew, yesterday.

no forced entry

"We are looking into whether he was killed by someone who has access to his space as there were no signs of forced entry," Lindsay said.

She said too that the police are on the lookout for Garwood's black Honda CRV motor vehicle, which they believe was the getaway vehicle.

Newnham, who is also the programme director for surgeries at the University of the West Indies, Mona, said that Garwood's murder is a major blow to not only this family and the profession but also to the country.

"Surgeons, in particular, are at the forefront in the treatment of trauma, and trauma is one of our biggest problems in Jamaica," Newnham said.

He noted that trauma is the leading cause of deaths in Jamaica among persons up to 40 years old.

"We are always understaffed and underserved in terms of surgery in Jamaica. His contribution would have been tremendous," said Newnham.

"It is going to be a big loss to the people of Jamaica," he added.

UPDATE November 3:

The St Andrew North Police have now charged three males including a juvenile in connection with the October 26 murder of 41-year-old medical doctor Martin Garwood at his home in Barbican, St Andrew.

Eighteen-year-old Ashanti Barrett otherwise called 'Ash' of Kenhill Drive, Kingston 19; and a 17-year-old boy also of a Kingston 19 address have been charged with murder.

The third person, 21-year-old Chevanne Sterling, otherwise called 'Chev', of Braeton, St Catherine has been charged with misprision of a felony.

The police say their court date will be announced after investigators complete the requirements for committal proceedings.

Rest in Peace Dr Martin he was good man and helped in some respects to persons who could not afford treatment costs.

A file has been submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn for her to provide guidance in the case of the three men who have been taken into custody in relation to the murder of medical doctor, Martin Garwood.

The 40-year-old doctor was stabbed to death on Wednesday, October 26 at his home on Halifax Avenue in Barbican, Kingston 7.

Communications officer for the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, says investigators in the case are awaiting the DPP’s decision before charging the men.

Their identities are being withheld pending further investigations.

Cruiser robbed by mystery man at gun point

A series of robberies in the Half Way Tree area as far north as the Marketplace, as far east as the Cholera cemetery then south eastwards as Waterloo Road and so on has had many wondering what the devil is happening. The robberies tend to occur during the week, at early dusk or as late as midnight. One time popular cruiser popularly known as ‘One seed’ due to his testicular appendage was the latest victim of the mystery bleached skin robber who has what appears to be a gun; I ran into him nearby as I was having drinks with some brethren by a popular bar on Molynes. Apart from targeting gay men looking for a hookup around town, as he seems to be aware of the spots he also has robbed reportedly women who traverse the aforementioned zones at nights as some persons may walk to Half Way Tree going about their business to possibly conserve on bus fare or just to enjoy a stroll. Purses, phones and cash reportedly have been taken by the suspect with an aggressive strategy but many suspect the gun looking item often disguised in a plastic bag according to ‘One seed’ maybe empty and there is talk of a beat down or entrapment of sorts by some of the guys to get him. The police informally are aware of the matter as well; a recent heist at Brooklyn Supermarket car park that is un-fenced where a woman was the victim was passed on to members at the nearby police precinct.

Friday July 29 was the One seed event just by the dimly lit section of Constant Spring Road between the said Brooklyn Supermarket and Kings Plaza, both old haunts for years but disabled after the adding of the vegetable, organic food store nearby and stepped up police patrols back then. Around 11pm Onie as he is also affectionately known was making his way down to Half Way Tree via Constant Spring Road as he approached the Brooklyn Supermarket area still dimly lit he was approached by the man who was walking in the opposite direction. According to Onie the man’s face was visible and he demanded money and so on, Onie being aggressive himself proceeded to tackle the miscreant but was surprised by the item appearing to be a gun in which time Onie kept his cool. Onie only gave him the small amount of cash he had on him but like any smart cruiser one hides more cash elsewhere on your person just in case.

Onie said he felt the gun was empty so he decided to tackle the man and was successful in throwing him to the ground, inflicting several blows. The man then made his escape complete with a litany of threats and expletives. Several female commercial sex workers also have been complaining of this bleached character that even some of the newer pimps have been taking care to be there for the ladies. Given the recent sharp increase of the numbers as well the man may be tempted to make repeat visits seeing no direct police interventions seem effective thus far. The man is also said to arrive on a bicycle which makes his escape easier. He is said to be bisexual as he has had some sexual encounter with men in the area and is said to be hailed originally from St Thomas but stays in Kingston, more is being gathered on the man.

This series of incidents have the hallmarks of the old problems of homelessness, desperation and miscreant behaviour; the unravelling of the lotto scamming illegal activity especially in western Jamaica with the corresponding spillage of newer faces into the population is cause for concern yet still after all these years. MSM/Transgender persons are not immune to the issues. It was one of the reasons why the Kingston populations increased exponentially as other stigma driven cases also add to the numbers. A murder for example of a sixteen year old fast rising lotto kingpin though not gay on July 3 in St James at a birthday party according to sources has had a ripple effect in the MSM world in that part of the island. The teen has stopped going to school and was integral in recruiting young gay men as the feeling in some circles they are more effective as closing deals with ‘clients’ given the perceived clearer speaking voice, cadence of speech and so on. The murdered teen did not hand over money as was expected that he had collected on time and in the agreed amounts so he paid for it with his life; with his demise all others who were or are associated with his outfits are seen as persona non grata which in turn leads to forced evictions (two reports thus far) by rival outfits.

Investigations are ongoing by the police and foreign agents who are on the island as evidenced in a recent court case in the Half Way Tree parish court where FBI and other persons were present, six persons are being tried under pain of extradition if found guilty, a roadblock has come as defense council has asked or challenged the legality of foreign agents involved in local raids. I fear another wave of incoming as occurred in 2008 – 10 with the subsequent spin offs.

If you’re a cruiser just be careful friends, maybe you have to curtail your routes.

Legendary ‘U-Girl’ passes after bizarre shooting incident

Sad to hear of this.

U-Girl in good times

Who knew that the day of April 12, 2016 approximately 2am will not be the same for one of the oldest queens in the business, the legendary ‘U-Girl’ who was in the hospital with gunshot wounds to the right side and back she sustained after an encounter with man aboard a car. We never expected to hear she would be dead as she made her transition on early Monday morning at the Kingston Public Hospital, KPH, especially after the good spirits she was in when persons spoke to her on Saturday night after surgery days prior while recovering.

A leggy drag diva who like many other girls (gurlz) had to turn it sometimes by pounding the pavement as educational opportunities were not there and every now and again displacement challenges forced her to try her hand at anything, including a short lived vending business; a story that can be told for so many of the other near forty displaced, homeless or unemployable friends who are forced to eek out an edgy existence including commercial sex work. She was a true survivor; U-Girl was on the streets in the business district on the time in question where she hung out for years from the days of the now closed Club Entourage formerly on Haughton Avenue operated by the late Brian Williamson, the risks with that are well known, a car with an alleged doctor on board and who allegedly had threatened some time before to shoot persons up after another queen was alleged to have stolen a phone from him; something went amiss and shots were heard sending the other persons gathered to scamper for refuge, it is not quite clear what was the subject of the short exchange as the others were said to be away from the car and Miss U-Girl was closer to the vehicle apparently in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The challenges from within and externally towards commercial sex workers (male and female), homeless msm/transgender and their friends are numerous and I have lost count. With the recent relocation of some of the persons to the old lands of the demolished Millsborough Avenue mansion and reliance on pounding the pavement in New Kingston has had and is still having clashes in the business district; since the shooting unconfirmed strange events have been happening such as men asking for certain personalities from the group which have myself and others wondering what is this that seems to be festering?

Close friends here and abroad are worried whether the population members can return to certain parts of New Kingston but the actions of some of the group or other persons who are miscreants, commit atrocities but the homeless guys are the ones who get the blame every time which also makes this prickly for the populations day or night. Apart from a few involved in some snack selling most if not all of them are involved in some kind of commercial sex work which makes matters worse both from a police standpoint who are forced to carry out patrols, detentions and arrests (too numerous to be listed here). A clash with men allegedly coming from a party nearby at Club Escape (yet again) a week ago proves that the business/entertainment district is heating up again while persons are said to be using the previously occupied Shoemaker Gully as a sex spot as they have no where else to go for an easy engagement with clients. What is also still disturbing to some but not surprising to me as to the push to keep the incident under raps where allegedly persons have been told not to raise the matter, however persons have ignored such calls and have been loud on the passing of their friend.

It is not the first time there have been shootings, near misses, rescues by good Samaritans (prior to the negative press over the years that has seen sympathy or support wither away) but the populations simply wonder all around.
The recent murder in the Sandy Gully is another example of the issues that attend to a slowly growing population. It is as if history is just repeating itself all over again. Many are also asking what would be so important on the phone that instead of reporting the matter to the police to have them address it one would leave, return and then shoot persons; then allegedly turn up at the hospital to inquire of the phone’s where abouts and then allegedly subtly threaten U-Girl in person that if she did not spill the beans she would be sorry. Was this doctor involved in or had a hand in U-Girl’s sudden failure in her health after being in good spirits and on the mend just days before.

U-Girl was a former multiple entrant in the possibly now defunct dancehall queen hosted by another legend Macey Antibellum Grey and she placed third and as a runner up in previous competitions. She was also known for her ability to walk in very high pumps long before red bottoms became fashionable and her wigs would fall behind her back similarly to former Shalamar’s lead “Real Love” singer Jody Watley which is what I think made her name or be tagged as U-Girl in her drag aesthetic as lanky model looking lanky type.

Also the Red Rat old dancehall “Hey U Girl” (inna de tight up skirt) anthemic hit which I regularly included in my playlists when I was one of the resident DJ at Entourage was a favourite of hers; she also performed to that song and others at parties such as the annual back to school events; she would wear very short skirts with stockings or knee high bobby socks and a small girl knapsack on her back adding to the look of a school girl/grown woman combo with her trademark dark eyed makeup. Hence the name ‘U-Girl’ got stuck.

She also would have a twirl to some queen tracks I spun although she was more a dancehall fan and was a fixture from the days of Club Entourage that also operated in New Kingston long before the homeless issues spiraled out of control and was a challenge then in the mid to late nineties; Uncle Brian Williamson had major headaches clearing the gates on Haughton Avenue especially on Friday nights and Saturday mornings after the club ended as the populations gathered and dished before dispersing after some pressure to leave. She also participated in the short lived interventions by persons like the late Howard Daly who tried a more artsy driven personality development sessions but those came to an end as other alternatives came by way of some of the participants, so some interest waned.

Rest in peace sister.

It was only a couple days ago another report of the challenges that can come with commercial sex work or exposed populations; a dissatisfied customer reacted violently to a male commercial sex worker in Montego Bay; even as discussions abound on making a sort of red light district in Negril as evidenced on Power 106FM on Thursday April 14 in a series of interviews by Cliff Hughes host on his ‘Online’ talkshow live from Negril on the day in question.

Sadly similarly to previous matters they do not get the investigative attention they deserve pursuant to getting closure and better yet the truth and justice.

Attempted murder of Portmore teacher being investigated

According to media reports and corroborated by a police source a male teacher residing in Portmore is in hospital recovering from an incident by Bayside then Rodney’s arms in a bizarre sequence of events.

Friday last April 1st All Fools Day around 4pm the teacher accompanied a man to Rodney’s Arms for reasons unclear in St Catherine where there was an argument which quickly turned violent; after a tussle the teacher sustained a wound to the lower body and then in an unexpected twist the man used a SUV to hit the teacher to the ground and drove away, the SUV was the teacher’s vehicle and it was found abandoned by the Bayside round-about.

The teacher sustained several cuts, bruises and was dazed as curious onlookers assisted him as the SUV sped away according to preliminary information ascertained at the scene of the incident. Even then members of the public were speculating the motive and the strangeness of the sequence of events; one nearby vendor was most expressive according to my source and stopped short of calling it a gay issue.

The suspected motive is one of ‘crime of passion’ a default conclusion police and others easy resort to when men are involved in unusual appearing matters; as is being circulated in police circles according to my source. The teacher has not been forthcoming with the matter too much as yet as he is securing the services of an attorney before proceeding. Others strongly suspect that it is a date gone horribly wrong as they often do and lead to public spats as evidenced only last weekend outside a popular New Kingston strip club car park nearby. Two alleged lesbians had a knock down dragged out fight complete with a captive audience of mostly men cheering and offering learned commentary related to boxing skills and the ladies supposed masculine mannerisms.

The aforementioned vendor’s comments bordering on homophobia is an indication to me that some Jamaicans still just dismiss genuine homophobic matters as nothing more than crimes of passion and of lovers supposedly quarrelling with each other leading to fights and murder.

elsewhere the said story is reported sensationally as:
Gay principal Penis chop off  by lover in Portmore – SUV was used to run him over

A homosexual rendezvous ended with one man suffering severe injuries to his penis after it was allegedly bitten by his lover in Portmore, St Catherine on Friday night.

The incident happened along the Green Bay Main Road close to the Rodney’s Arms Restaurant.

The victim, who is a primary school principal, was seen bleeding profusely on the roadway and the police were alerted. When the cops arrived they were informed that the victim and another man went to the location and an argument developed between them. The argument turned bloody and the man was savagely bitten on his penis by his aggrieved lover.

But his woes did not end there as his white Mitsubishi Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) was used to run him over.

The vehicle was found abandoned at the Bay Side round-a-bout and is now parked at the Bridgeport Police Station.

He was assisted to the Spanish Town Hospital by the police where he was admitted in serious condition. Doctors are reportedly trying to repair the damage he suffered to his member.

The Greater Portmore Police have confirmed the incident but reported that the victim has not pressed charges or offered any information

Police have confirmed that the area close to Rodney’s Arms is a regular haunt for homosexuals who visit the area to make out.

meanwhile:

the home where the murder occurred

A report on CVM TV only some days ago of a chopping matter involving one Donovan White aka Phil in Montego Bay brought such suspicions front and center, the roommate was interviewed and his every action including the tears or lack thereof in sufficient numbers was used to dismiss his sorrow; while reiterating an old adage that gay rights are not to come as gays are lying about murders when it is us (gays) who are killing each other off in jealousy. Sad that even as details are scarce profiling has led to stigma. As if to suggest jealousy is far deeper in same gender relationships and liaisons versus heterosexual unions.

Bayside Portmore however has factored before in public spats playing out for some reason, maybe the said location of Rodney’s Arms is a popular space for fish, other sea food and entertainment devoid of stigma oddly enough given the myriad of persons who use the space.

In a previous post I had reported on such a matter:

Reports suggests that on Saturday July 10 around 2am in the morning a man who was coming from an event on the strip was on his way home according to him. He reportedly saw a motorvehicle parked on the strip with a female allegedly in the passenger side of the car, the man knowing that in that vicinity the commercial sex is done he approached the “woman” to conduct business.

They negotiated the deal for sexual favours in exchange for an agreed price, he was seen entering the vehicle by eyewitnesses where the apparent agreed sexual favours were performed by the CSW on the man in the form of oral sex. It was after the act was completed and he requested additional services that he discovered she was in fact a “he” as the services he requested require penetrative sex which the cross dresser could not fulfill.

An argument ensued where upon hearing the crossdressers voice it was clear she was a man in drag, by which time stones were hurled into the vehicle damaging it. The drag queen also defended herself by hurling stones as well and chasing him away. The man subsequently tried reporting the matter to the cops but was himself held and maybe charged for malicious destruction of property resulting from the incident.

Oh those ‘str8’ bi-curious boys & their emotional baggage

I have to agree with my friend who said words to the effect as in the post’s title it is on rare occasions one run into men who are supposedly on the fringes on the continuum of homosexuality and experimentation or exploration. They are ever so cautious yet defensive especially when it comes to role play in sex; oh no no bottoming, ‘man a man, man a nuh oman’ (I am a man not a woman and therefore won’t bow) or play a passive role, it is just too much to play the sexual role of a woman hence all other kinds of responses and masking comes forth. I have spoken to such experimentation and insecurity before in previous posts such as a recent run in by an old cruiser brethren of mine who sustained a broken arm after a tussle with another man after a brief sexual encounter; yet the man literally freaked out that he erred in doing the act and then sought to blame the very brethren he just enjoyed a partnered masturbation session with.

I met a fella on adam4adam recently, yes I use it like some of us do and then pretend they don’t acting all decent and stuff; we know very well that that site is still the main hookup centre apart from social media; in meeting the dude in stealth online we finally exposed our true identities after some extended communication although he wanted a more instant approach based on my profile pictures of my dick and ass; no face pictures are up as is customary for many Jamaican members. Such anonymity has other implications of trust, deception an such that I won’t get into now but suffice it to say this lead up to the actual hookup was relatively smooth. We met face to face finally after several whatsapp and A4A messaging and I liked what I saw physically; frankly I was not interested in his mind for say as his dick photo was what pulled me into him. The 36 year old was coy pretentiously at first but soon opened up and expressed that he liked me as I was not girly (the first sign of insecurity and policing of attitudes or even aesthetics) I am very comfortable in my own skin and it took years to get there so I get very careful in navigating hook-ups or socializing with men who express such scrutiny.

We met eventually and finally decided to do the deed by the usual you show me yours I show you mine lead in then the exploration; bearing in mind I have not used A4A for a while but met my hook-ups at parties I DJ at or repeat sessions with trusted buddies and cruising catches. As this is not my Xrated blog I won’t get into too much sexual detail but use your imagination as if you were with a man in a sexual encounter. The shocker however to me was he did not want to go all the way but wanted me to play a full passive or receptive role (as a woman) bearing in mind I am fully versatile; although he described himself as gay (not sure he understand sexuality) he refused to reciprocate in certain respects as he saw it effectively a feminizing is too much for him and he was not willing to budge any in terms of exploring the options and feelings. His defence afterwards was he was only ‘passing through’ a term I have had said to me repeatedly with previous hook-ups. In supposedly ‘passing through’ he may be implying he is not ‘gay’ in the true sense of the word as homosexual as that has too much attached to it in terms of effeminacy; remembering he said I was not ‘girly’ a frightening issue for many men who have sex with men but are on the proverbial downlow or ‘passing through’ types.

So in ‘passing through’ he is not obligated to go all the way by engaging in flip flop suggestion or request. Sexual contact must therefore be limited and left to the hetero-normative sex with strict roles carefully observed in bed and everyone must stay in their place; no touching beyond the norm or exploring certain parts of the body in the fondling process. I have met men who even literally define or dictate the boundaries of where I can go or touch including the feared wandering of fingers and hands by the anus or butt cheeks; one guy told me some years ago that my hands must not pass his waist but I can do anything with the front end.

Back to this present guy, in the after conversation surprisingly he was patient to conduct as other men similar to him I have met just hit it and quit it afterwards with no extended talk as the ‘man a man’ (I am a man) mantra takes precedence and real men do not talk too much like women. He said he always had feelings for men but kept it real quiet and had a girlfriend up until some time ago while stoutly declaring that she was not aware but I have no way of proving that. Cautious approaches to sex with defined or prescribed activities/demands and navigating socialization is a clear sign to me of the bi-curious types; but I have mastered the art of working my way around them. He declared that we cannot meet too often (the ‘pass through’ business again!) and that he doesn’t really see himself as ‘gay’ in other words by virtue of having limited sexual contact with the same sex in his eyes he is not gay; by virtue of having a woman or being attracted to women he is not gay as well (there is something called bisexuality); by virtue of playing a traditional hetero-masculine sexual role albeit with another man he is a man’s man and so being ‘gay’ is some journey to feminization and a weakening of his manhood. These are real fears that have had an impact on how men who have sex men interact and even fall out with disastrous consequences at times often seen as crimes of passion when they go public. Luckily I got one of the docile ones (whew!) but who knows? A friend of mine had an experience some years back where he had to literally run away from a hotel he had just had a not session with as the guy literally changed guilt blaming my bro that he made him do something he was not into really but he had a hard-on none the less and was clearly interested in what was going on but did nothing to stop it in the heat of the moment.

I would love a study or an expert to help me grapple with how men who have sex with men just can change their stance or personas literally especially after sex. Masking or self denial even in the face of just having sex with another man is baffling to me. I had jokingly come up with a name some years ago in an old blog post referencing a similar change of persona matter; I had named it P.E.A.D post erotic arousal disorder;

see: P.E.A.D a man's attitude changes after sex 2008 from sister blog GLBTQ Jamaica

I am not a psychologist so to have ‘disorder’ in the name is just for emphasis as I and others via reports have had run ins with men who just literally change right before your eyes after sexual activity. After sex guilt often seems to be the evidential outcome of such change and is usually more visible in hyper-masculine types as opposed to semi or fully effeminate men; as if they are helpless to pursue their true urges but when they do the feeling of shame and committing a sin of some sort sets in.

I expressed that we should keep in touch and he agreed after a short ponder; he sounds willing to engage outside of the hook-up imperative but definitely not a relationship. Others would just meet skeet and leet lol after the wipe up in the comings and goings of the hook-up.

Nuff love.

Teacher found dead in home, crime of passion is suspected by cops

TRELAWNY, Jamaica — Up to late afternoon on March 9 the Trelawny police were working to apprehend the killer or killers of a St James High School teacher whose decomposing body was discovered at his home here yesterday morning.

The deceased has been identified as 53-year-old of Dexter Dacres of New Haven Heights, Granville, Trelawny.

Read from the Observer: Teacher's decomposing body found at Trelawny home

A reliable OBSERVER ONLINE source revealed that among the things removed from the house yesterday morning was a note that read:

"I killed him because he tried to rape me"

Condoms and lubricants were also said to be found in the English language teacher's bedroom.

According to the police, they were summoned to the swanky New Haven Heights, Trelawny neighbourhood, by residents, who detected a stench coming from the home of the teacher yesterday morning.

Upon their arrival, the cops discovered the decomposing body, with multiple stab wounds, wrapped in a sheet.

The body was removed to the Doyley's Funeral Home.

The teacher was said to have been last seen on Saturday in the company of a boy who he said was a relative of his, residents say.

Dacres, who reportedly started working at St James High in January, is said to have got along well with students and members of staff there. He was said to have also paid special interest in slow learners, a senior teacher at the school revealed.

The Falmouth police are probing the incident.

Meanwhile a Vice Principal at St. James High School, who gave her name only as Mrs. Panton, says the staff is shaken by Mr. Dacres’ death.

Commanding Officer for the parish, Superintendent Clive Blair says relatives had reported Mr. Dacres missing

Superintendent Blair says the Police are theorizing that Mr. Dacres was killed in a crime of passion; as per usual the cops always default to that description no sooner than they figure or suspect the matter involves MSM as victims or perpetrators.

This case reminds me of the John Terry matter where a similar note was left on the scene as reported yet the killers and the case can't seem to get anywhere.

Hope they solve this one as so many have gone cold after much hype and initial shock of the news.

After catching midway a radio discussion on the subject of Jamaica being labelled as homophobic I did a quick look at the long held belief in Jamaica by anti gay advocates, sections of media and homophobes that several murders of alleged gay victims are in fact 'crimes of passion' or have jealousy as their motives but it is not as simple or generalized as that.

The Hypocrisy of Jamaican Anti Gay Groups & Selective Actions of Societal Ills

The selectivity of the anti gay religious voices on so called societal ills is examined in this podcast as other major issues that require the "church" to have spoken up including sexual abuse by pastors in recent times yet mere silence on those matters is highlighted.

Why are these groups and so called child rights activists creating mass hysteria and have so much strength for HOMOSEXUALITY but are quiet on corruption in government, missing children, crime in the country and so much more but want to stop same gender loving persons from enjoying peace of mind and PRIVACY?

Also is the disturbing tactic of deliberately conflating paedophilia with same gender sex as if to suggest reforming the buggery law will cause an influx of buggered children when we know that is NOT TRUE.

MSM/Trans homeless - From gully to graveyard

When are lives interrupted be allowed a real honest chance to move from interruption to independence and stability? I just cannot tell you friends.

An article appeared in the gleaner today that just sent me into sadness mode again with this ugly business of LGBTQI homelessness. The author of the piece needs an intervention too as he (Ryon Jones) uses terms such as cross dressers and or homeless men which if transgender persons are present they cannot be described or seen as such, sigh another clear display of the lack of impact and reach of so called advocacies and advocates who are more interested in parading as working but really aint having much impact as they ought to or claim.

We are told of houses being put together from time in memorial; the Dwayne’s House project seems dead in the water, the Larry Chang (named after a JFLAG cofounder) seems stuck in the mud and Colour Pink’s so called Rainbow House seems insignificant in relation to the size and scope of the national problem. JFLAG as presented on this blog is obviously not interested in getting their hands dirty really on homelessness save and except for using the populations as cannon fodder and delegating same; as far as I am concerned presenting them as victims of homophobia which is true but where are the programs and the perceived millions donated or granted since President Obama’s visit to address LGBTQ matters?

Dr Shelly Ann Weeks on Homophobia - What are we afraid of?

Former host of Dr Sexy Live on Nationwide radio and Sexologist tackles in a simplistic but to the point style homophobia and asks the poignant question of the age, What really are we as a nation afraid of?

It seems like homosexuality is on everyone's tongue. From articles in the newspapers to countless news stories and commentaries, it seems like everyone is talking about the gays. Since Jamaica identifies as a Christian nation, the obvious thought about homosexuality is that it is wrong but only male homosexuality seems to influence the more passionate responses. It seems we are more open to accepting lesbianism but gay men are greeted with much disapproval.

Dancehall has certainly been very clear where it stands when it comes to this issue with various songs voicing clear condemnation of this lifestyle. Currently, quite a few artistes are facing continuous protests because of their anti-gay lyrics. Even the law makers are involved in the gayness as there have been several calls for the repeal of the buggery law. Recently Parliament announced plans to review the Sexual Offences Act which, I am sure, will no doubt address homosexuality.

Jamaica has been described as a homophobic nation. The question I want to ask is: What are we afraid of? There are usually many reasons why homosexuality is such a pain in the a@. Here are some of the more popular arguments MORE HERE

JFLAG Excludes Homeless MSM from IDAHOT Symposium on Homelessness

Reminder

In a shocking move JFLAG decided not to invite or include homeless MSM in their IDAHO activity for 2013 thus leaving many in wonderment as to the reason for their existence or if the symposium was for "experts" only while offering mere tokenism to homeless persons in the reported feeding program. LISTEN TO THE AUDIO ENTRY HERE sad that the activity was also named in honour of one of JFLAG's founders who joined the event via Skype only to realize the issue he held so dear in his time was treated with such disrespect and dishonor. Steps to take when confronted by the police & your rights compromised:

a) Ask to see a lawyer or Duty Council

b) Only give name and address and no other information until a lawyer is present to assist

c) Try to be polite even if the scenario is tense

d) Don’t do anything to aggravate the situation

e) Every complaint lodged at a police station should be filed and a receipt produced, this is not a legal requirement but an administrative one for the police to track reports

f) Never sign to a statement other than the one produced by you in the presence of the officer(s)

g) Try to capture a recording of the exchange or incident or call someone so they can hear what occurs, place on speed dial important numbers or text someone as soon as possible

h) File a civil suit if you feel your rights have been violated

i) When making a statement to the police have all or most of the facts and details together for e.g. "a car" vs. "the car" represents two different descriptions

j) Avoid having the police writing the statement on your behalf except incases of injuries, make sure what you want to say is recorded carefully, ask for a copy if it means that you have to return for it

Vacant at Last! ShoemakerGully: Displaced MSM/Trans Persons were is cleared December 2014

CVM TV carried a raid and subsequent temporary blockade exercise of the Shoemaker Gully in the New Kingston district as the authorities respond to the bad eggs in the group of homeless/displaced or idling MSM/Trans persons who loiter there for years.

Question is what will happen to the population now as they struggle for a roof over their heads and food etc. The Superintendent who proposed a shelter idea (that seemingly has been ignored by JFLAG et al) was the one who led the raid/eviction.

New Kingston Cop Proposes Shelter for Shoemaker Gully LGBT Homeless Population

Superintendent Murdock

The same cop who has factored in so many run-ins with the youngsters in the Shoemaker Gully (often described as a sewer by some activists) has delivered on a promise of his powerpoint presentation on a solution to the issue in New Kingston, problem is it is the same folks who abandoned the men (their predecessors) from the powerful cogs of LGBT/HIV that are in earshot of his plan.

This ugly business of LGBTQ homelessness and displacements or self imposed exile by persons has had several solutions put forth, problem is the non state actors in particular do not want to get their hands dirty as the more combative and political issues to do with buggery's decriminalization or repeal have risen to the level of importance more so than this. Let us also remember this is like the umpteenth meeting with the cops, some of the LGBT homeless persons and the advocacy structure.

Remember JFLAG's exclusion of the group from that IDAHO symposium on LGBT homelessess? See HERE, how can we ask the same people who only want to academise and editorialise the issue to also try to address their own when they do not want to get their hands dirty but publish wonderful reports as was done earlier this month, see HERE: (re)Presenting and Redressing LGBT Homelessness in Jamaica: Towards a Multifaceted Approach to Addressing Anti-Gay Related Displacement also LGBT homelessness has always been with us from the records of Gay Freedom Movement(1974) to present but the current issues started from 2009, see: The Quietus ……… The Safe House Project Closes and The Ultimatum on December 30, 2009 as carried on sister blog Gay Jamaica Watch. As promised here is another periodical update on an income generating/diligence building project now in effect for some now seven former homeless and displaced MSM in St Catherine, it originally had twelve persons but some have gotten jobs elsewhere, others have simply walked away and one has relocated to another parish, to date their weed whacking earning business capacity has been struggling as previous posts on the subject has brought to bear.

Although some LGBT persons residing in the parish have been approached by yours truly and others to increase client count for the men costs such as gas and maintenance of the four machines that are rotated between the enrolled men are rising weekly literally while the demand is instead decreasing due to various reasons.

What to Do .....

a. Make a phone call: to a lawyer or relative or anyone

b. Ask to see a lawyer immediately: if you don’t have the money ask for a Duty Council

c. A Duty Council is a lawyer provided by the state

d. Talk to a lawyer before you talk to the police

e. Tell your lawyer if anyone hits you and identify who did so by name and number

f. Give no explanations excuses or stories: you can make your defense later in court based on what you and your lawyer decided

g. Ask the sub officer in charge of the station to grant bail once you are charged with an offence

h. Ask to be taken before a justice of The Peace immediately if the sub officer refuses you bail

i. Demand to be brought before a Resident Magistrate and have your lawyer ask the judge for bail

j. Ask that any property taken from you be listed and sealed in your presence

Cases of Assault:An assault is an apprehension that someone is about to hit you

The following may apply:

1) Call 119 or go to the station or the police arrives depending on the severity of the injuries

2) The report must be about the incident as it happened, once the report is admitted as evidence it becomes the basis for the trial

3) Critical evidence must be gathered as to the injuries received which may include a Doctor’s report of the injuries.

4) The description must be clearly stated; describing injuries directly and identifying them clearly, show the doctor the injuries clearly upon the visit it must be able to stand up under cross examination in court.

5) Misguided evidence threatens the credibility of the witness during a trial; avoid the questioning of the witnesses credibility, the tribunal of fact must be able to rely on the witness’s word in presenting evidence

6) The court is guided by credible evidence on which it will make it’s finding of facts

7) Bolster the credibility of a case by a report from an independent disinterested party.

Notes on Bail & Court Appearance issues

If in doubt speak to your attorney

Bail and its importance -

If one is locked up then the following may apply:
Locked up over a weekend - Arrested pursuant to being charged or detained There must be reasonable suspicion i.e. about to commit a crime, committing a crime or have committed a crime.

There are two standards that must be met:

1). Subjective standard: what the officer(s) believed to have happened

2). Objective standard: proper and diligent collection of evidence that implicates the accused To remove or restrain a citizen’s liberty it cannot be done on mere suspicion and must have the above two standards

 Police officers can offer bail with exceptions for murder, treason and alleged gun offences, under the Justice of the Peace Act a JP can also come to the police station and bail a person, this provision as incorporated into the bail act in the late nineties

 Once a citizen is arrested bail must be considered within twelve hours of entering the station – the agents of the state must give consideration as to whether or not the circumstances of the case requires that bail be given

 The accused can ask that a Justice of the Peace be brought to the station any time of the day. By virtue of taking the office excluding health and age they are obliged to assist in securing bail

"Bail is not a matter for daylight

Locked up and appearing in court

 Bail is offered at the courts office provided it was extended by the court; it is the court that has the jurisdiction over the police with persons in custody is concerned.

 Bail can still be offered if you were arrested and charged without being taken to court a JP can still intervene and assist with the bail process.

Other Points of Interest

 The accused has a right to know of the exact allegation

 The detainee could protect himself, he must be careful not to be exposed to any potential witness

 Avoid being viewed as police may deliberately expose detainees

 Bail is not offered to persons allegedly with gun charges

 Persons who allegedly interfere with minors do not get bail

 If over a long period without charge a writ of habeas corpus however be careful of the police doing last minute charges so as to avoid an error

 Every instance that a matter is brought before the court and bail was refused before the accused can apply for bail as it is set out in the bail act as every court appearance is a chance to ask for bail

 Each case is determined by its own merit – questions to be considered for bail:

a) Is the accused a flight risk?

b) Are there any other charges that the police may place against the accused?

c) Is the accused likely to interfere with any witnesses?

d) What is the strength of the crown’s/prosecution’s case?

 Poor performing judges can be dealt with at the Judicial Review Court level or a letter to the Chief Justice can start the process

Battle Lines Javed Jaghai versus the state & the Jamaica Buggery Law

Originally aired on CVM TV December 8th 2013, apologies for some of the glitches as the source feed was not so hot and it kept dropping from source or via the ISP, NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED and is solely for educational and not for profit use and review. The issue of the pending legal challenge in the Constitutional Court in Jamaica as filed by Javed Jaghai an outspoken activist who happens also to be openly aetheist.

The opposing sides are covered as well such as
The Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society
The Love March
Movement Jamaica

The feature seems destined for persons who are just catching up to the issues and repositioning JFLAG in particular in the public domain as their image has taken a beating in some respects especially on the matter of the homeless MSM front. They need to be careful that an elitist perception is not held after this after some comments above simplistic discourse, the use of public agitation as beneath some folks and the obvious overlooking of the ordinary citizen who are realy the ones who need convincing to effect the mindset change needed and the national psyche's responses to homosexuality in general.
