The Editor, Sir:
Who should our young girls turn to for guidance and protection from paedophiles? Incest is very prevalent. Sexual abuse often starts in the home. Fathers and other male relatives often are the first to violate this trust.
One young woman was repeatedly raped by her father since age seven until she fled the home. When she was 21 and had a child, the father came visiting his grandchild. He claimed he could not get home as buses stopped running, so she gave up her bed and slept on the floor with her child.
Ulterior motives
But he had ulterior motives. He forced himself on her at gunpoint. She said, "Am I not your daughter?" He replied that it did not matter. This incident was recounted on a popular night-time call-in programme.
What should be done to protect our children? The State needs to stand up for our most vulnerable citizens and send a clear message which must serve as a strong deterrent to sexual abuse.
Most Jamaicans, from the highest office downwards, have very strong homophobic views and are not shy to express these. Why then can't we be as vocal against paedophiles?
Because it is a heterosexual disease? It should be treated with the same disdain if you ask me.
We need to start a national campaign against this scourge.
I am, etc.,
