Yet another set of young msm have been found to be homeless this time outside of Kingston, the capital city, in a post on my glbtqjamaica blog I highlighted the young men from Kingston. Now I have come into contact by phone to two men in their late teens who have been wondering around, crashing here and there trying to seek employment and to better themselves following rejection and ostracism from family members and by extension everyone in their original areas of residence.
While the men have not been threatened with death they have been told to leave and with that hanging over ones head it shouldn't be taken lightly.
Also see Insensitive Parents & Displaced MSM on the difficulties faced by some young msm.
In the captioned post from glbtq that group in Kingston are still struggling but not so badly as a NGO has intervened somewhat with little intervention activities. However the associated problems that come with dealing with homeless population elsewhere are not knew, discipline being a major one.
There are also struggling msm who are contacted through the Respective regional health authorities of the Ministry of Health through HIV/AIDS interventions but these interventions do not address personal sustenance issues and some self efficacious activities.
What can be done? The only LGBTQ organization here is broke and who knows when they will get funding to even address this particular growing problem. Some time ago I know a half way house was suggested but I don't know where it went since.
There are some individuals gay and straight who understand the issues and try to help out when they can but this cannot be the final solution, one can only assist for a time. Rural areas do not have some much issues of homophobic violence towards gays so the men can move about a little easier than in the major cities and towns.
With the downturn in the economy I fear we may yet see more and those msm who are involved in illegal activities may soon find themselves struggling too as those are drying up due to police interventions island wide. Let's hope their lives are spared as they try to survive.
