The colleague DJ who was upset that the song was being played interrupted the set by grabbing the microphone of the active jock and proceeded to bun out "white battyman bout yah" (white gay men by here) he also got some support from the audience who at first were shocked at the mic grab and harsh comments to his colleague but soon there were the proverbial"bap bap bap" (imitating gun shots as a way to agree with a point made) sounds from onlookers in support of the stance taken.
The men almost came to blows infront of their patrons with some persons curved over in laughter while others stared in shock as their fun was abruptly stopped (the song was still playing at low volume). Other male patrons who were eventually in support of the non broadcast of the tune could be heard reeling off homophobic comments including the infamous "battyman fi dead" rant. Matters cooled afterwards as the song was discontinued and the DJs made it up live on microphone after some several minutes and the music playing recommenced with some persons still laughing and commenting.
The tone of the dance however changed to a more harsh feel as a series of anti gay songs were selected to rile the crowd in a frenzy as is customary in many street dances, there is always a segment for that. Some of the songs in that set were Capleton's 'Shot Him Up' Sizzla's 'Nah Apologise' and of course the anthem of them all Buju Banton's 'Boom Bye Bye'
I remember working with another DJ some years ago when I was more active in spinning at a popular club in New Kingston and he decided to play the latter Buju Banton 'Boom Bye Bye' track supposedly in response to me being there as many of the patrons who attended the mixed event were profiled by him and his friends as they said hello to me, the lesbian promoter however reminded him (though not a fully LGBT event) that he knew the type of event he was at prior to signing the contract and accepting the deposit so he should keep it clean.
Some Background to the Sam Smith song:
In an interview with NME, Sam Smith said that the song was written in a studio in Old Street with James Napier (Jimmy Napes) and William Phillips (also known as "Tourist"). Phillips started playing with three chords on the piano, and Napier quickly provided a drum pattern, and according to Sam Smith, "the song just flowed out of us so naturally," and the song was written in 30 to 40 minutes. After finishing the song, he started to layer his vocal about 20 times, singing in different parts of the studio and harmonizing. The result sounded like a gospel choir, but all from his own voice, and this demo was then used in the released song.
According to Smith, "the song is about the moment in the morning after a one night stand, where the person you are with leaves your house, and you are left by yourself, and it's just a second, where you are just like: 'I wish, I wish'. You don't even love them, you don't really fancy them that much, it's just nice to have someone in the bed next to you."

The song won the Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and in his acceptance speech for winning the Record of the Year, Smith said that "I want to thank the man who this record is about who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys
Lyrics
"Stay With Me"
[Verse 1:]
Guess it's true, I'm not good at a one-night stand
But I still need love 'cause I'm just a man
These nights never seem to go to plan
I don't want you to leave, will you hold my hand?
[Chorus:]
Oh, won't you stay with me?
'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love, it's clear to see
But darling, stay with me
[Verse 2:]
Why am I so emotional?
No, it's not a good look, gain some self-control
And deep down I know this never works
But you can lay with me so it doesn't hurt
[Chorus 3x]
One can remember the faux pas by politician Dayton Campbell via his twitter account after another gay artist Frank Ocean won his grammy. more HERE.
Thankfully he has been redeemed publicly (JFLAG flyer above) by some interventions and has changed his stance it seems, whether it is a natural one or he is responds to the market to avoid loss of political capital is another matter.
"Really?? Dayton Campbell doan have NO other contribution to make to Twitter than a Frank Ocean comment? When di dollar is 95 for ONE USD?" said one Twitter user.
Another user posted, "I hope the Jamaican social media space makes this a teachable moment for a Jamaican politician. Dr Campbell, your hate will not be condoned."
While another user stated "Sista P would a shame a him. But she's busy working, working, working."
"They took a different interpretation of what was said, in my tweet I was talking about the content of the music, and the message that is being sent by the artiste. I was not attacking anyone's sexual orientation."
When asked if he thinks this blunder will affect his political future, he told a media house with fervour, "Absolutely not! I do not think it will have any impact at all, but if it should, my head will be bloody but unbowed."
Hypocrisy or real? we may never know.
Sadly the fear of the unknown, the feminine (perceived or real) and just personal insecurity is so deeply entrenched in our country that just changing the buggery law is not going to be enough to address our version of homophobia.
It needs reaching hearts and minds as well.
Peace and tolerance
