Veteran Journalist, Actress, Lecturer, Broadcaster(excellent coverage of Obama's visit which was used on the Rachel Madow show) and Columnist Fae Ellington when asked what she thought about the comments made by President Obama in Jamaica with regards to LGBT matters given our culture context on the subject said in part she responded:
"He was very clever cause he would have known more or less that Jamaicans are conservative on this matter but he also had to address it and um; he walked right between the raindrops where this one was concerned and that is why he is such a great leader.
Miss Ellington was a guest panelist on the That's a Rap RJR's weekly news roundup.
She continued:
"....he's put it out there but he said hey in a sense you have your cultural nuances where this is concerned and you have to ensure that people's human rights are not trampled on but I'm not going to go any further with this with you people because you got to emerge in your own time; in your own space and place and with your own understanding."
When pressed by host Earl Moxam is she was not overstating what the President said and the matter of pressure being brought to bear behind the scenes she replied:
"Of course, I think he would have been so informed that he would understand that you .... this one is an eggshell thing; and you have to be very careful; it is not a big old egg weh ostrich lay and yuh can 'tan up (stand up) pon it and it nuh broke (does not break) it's a chicken egg thing; of course I think he will bring subtle pressure but I also belief that he was suggesting that there is a respect for what we; how we function here."
Earl Moxam:
"How do we go forward on this from a legislative point of view do you think?"
The other guest an attorney Clive Munroe Jr replied:
"Uh there is actually not a lot that you could do from a legislative perspective to change it; all you will have to do but the truth is that even with the passage of the Sexual Offences Act that particular bit of legislation remained unchanged; the reason for that is that is culturally this is a massive massive issue.
Some of the tools that have been used by gay rights lobbies over the years included using political and money pressure against persons who are against them; and you saw when they started doing these rallies in Jamaica that you had persons saying well any political party that changes this in Jamaica remember them and remember to vote against them; that is significant as a counter measure towards the amendment of that particular legislation.
There is alot; Jamaica is changing if you just live here you know that it is changing; I think for some of the lobby groups they would prefer for it to change faster but you can't force things; for me when President Obama is a very skillful politician; a great orator and the way that he addressed it regardless how you felt about it you have to admire the way it was addressed; I think also said something that I found of interest when he said that well we don't believe in supporting an American model, you must all develop the way that you need to develop out of in your own time because for us we must respect you where you respect us.
We do however have these fundamental things that we believe in but in time we'll come to where you need to come."
Fae Ellington:
"as some Jamaicans may say him a nuh eeediat (he is not an idiot)
I have very little to add to this exchange save and except for some reference to the points made done prior to today's reaction to Obama's visit and subsequent speeches and engagement with the public.
